South Korea gets PS3 80GB.

Quote:
Well we have to admit, we sure didn't see this one coming. There have been rumors of a higher capacity PlayStation 3 for several months now, but no one figured that the first 80GB model would drop not in Japan or the US, but South Korea. And yet that's exactly what's scheduled to go down June 16th, when the previously-denied, Euro-spec'ed PS3 (but no 20GB or 60GB models, it seems) will hit the land of Samsung and LG for a pre-tax 518,000 won -- or just $556. While we don't want to get your hopes up, we can't help but think that this move bodes well for US consumers too; after all, the 80 gigger is already through the FCC, meaning that price drops and unimaginable storage space could be right around the corner.

Update: Not that this means much in a world where companies tell bold-faced public lies in order to protect their business plans, but Sony has informed GamesIndustry.biz that there are no plans to sell the 80GB PS3 in Europe, or anywhere else outside of South Korea for that matter. In other words, we expect word on an international release any day now.
Source Engadget.

Oh, and there's a rumor that PS3's price it to be dropped by hundred bucks by October. Well, since they got rid of Emotion Engine and are moving to 65nm which is cheaper they should drop the price, PS3 really needs it.

From what I know, South Koreans love console games. All of my South Korean friends have wii, ps3, or both. So, it isn't a huge surprise on expanding the market in South Korea.

I know why i'm waiting before i'll be getting a ps3
It's stuff like this (and i'm pretty sure there's more to come) that justifies the time one has to wait.

I'm also waiting on more big titles, I'm not spending $800+$150 on FFXIII!

Well, I should be expecting an email from one of my cousins soon about this...they were waiting for something like this. Still though, Sony should really get Blizzard to put a Blizzard Collections game or something on the PS3...they'd sell like hot cakes!

Very interesting move on Sony's part.

Also, I need some clarification...what sort of stuff do you put on the PS3 hard drive? I know on 360 there are game demos, XBLA games, movies, TV shows, and save games. Does the PS3 have pretty much the same stuff, or is there more? I find it interesting that MS just released the 120gb HDD but they said that they are going to keep the focus on people with the 20gb.

Yes, you put all this stuff (demos, PStore games, movies/trailers/etc. - downloaded or converted to .mp4). Finally you can install Linux and turn PS3 into a computer.

As for Xbox Elite, IMO it's not a good move 'cause you don't get too much with it, unless you fancy black color :> 120GB HDD is good, but there are some issues with it: you may copy only one 20GB drive to it and you cannot copy bakwards, meaning 120GB -> 20GB which is kind of silly. Finally it should be equipped with HD DVD drive and it's not. Maybe at least the console itself will not break so often.

I read about the pricedrop as well, even if it means more loss for Sony, they need to sell more consoles. Especially seeing how I am seeing offers on premium 360's that cost half of a PS3. People won't pay double for a system that doesn't offer half of what the competition has to offer.

And having larger harddisks was just a matter of time, these small ones are nice to get rid of some old stock, and it wouldn't surprise me if we'd have revisions with larger sized hard drives in them.

Well you can buy the 120gb HDD by itself, you don't have to get the Elite. And I don't really know why you'd want to transfer 120 back to 20...well, I'm sure someone will.

Also, MS didn't include the HD-DVD drive because it would've boosted the price way up, and MS historically doesn't choose sides in a format war. It is kind of a bummer though, I wish my 360 had a HD-DVD drive already in there like the PS3 has Blu-Ray. Oh well.

Since when does sitting in front of a computer qualifies a sport? Should tv watching be a sport too.

Being a counterstrike and warcraft3 player, I know koreans take their gaming seriously. But I'm sure they wouldn't call it a sport. More like competition. Like the annual CAL or the WCG tournaments.

I fail to see why chess, pool and darts can be seen as sports and other games cannot. Welcome to the new millenium, you have about 7 and a half years of catching up to do.

I fail to see why you can think chess , pool , or darts are anywhere close to being a sport. Unless you can prove otherwise, I'd call them as games instead.

sport - Definitions from Dictionary.com

Quote:
sport
–noun
1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.
There you go.

That's not to say that videogames aren't games, of course they are. But I still think that professional gaming can be considered a sport.

There's just as much drug use as in professional cycling
