Question Your opinion on remakes

There seems to be a trend on some companies to remake their games.
By various reasons, mostly monetary as some may say.

Do you think that decision is good for the gamers (us)?

Or you rather have your classic games intact, with the same old school feel?

I don't like remakes at all! If a game is good enough to deserve a remake.... it means the original game was great!! and thus doesn't need a remake.

EXCEPTION: FF7 for PS3 gawd that demo looked so hawt!! I want it now!!!

Depends what game they are remaking and how they are remaking it(new content, better visuals,fine-tuned gameplay etc.).If they are remaking Final Fantasy I and II for the 10th time then i'm certainly against it but if it's an old classic like Tomb Raider I then yeah,i don't really have a problem with remakes.

Only if it really adds something to the game, or to remind gamers of a true classic. I really enjoyed the Settlers 2 remake, adding multiplayer and having tweaked some stuff really breathes new life into the game. The series went downhill anyway, so this was the right thing to do.

Anyway: innovation / reinvention > remakes

If a remake can not only visually enhance the game, but also make the game truly what the developers dreamt it could be, but was impossible to do back then...sure.

FF7 with physics, much vaster areas with multiple ways to explore any given area, vast oceans of interactivity, the full story that it's authors had wanted to convey, a larger array of monsters, items, item synthing, day and night cylces, greater character development, more gameplay facets, better controls, navigation, and more, more, more...sure.

Problem with making a remake of an epic game is that it would have to be a significant body of work to even realise the fans dreams, you risk souring a classic game, the game was classic then, but can it be a classic in this era, and how can you really add to what was (then) perfection?

If a game does deserve a remake, you have to sit back and go "can we make it a classic today", if you can't leave it be.

It all depends. I like remakes of the likes of Tales of Phantasia were substantial extra content (like a new character, a polished battle engine and a bunch new array of dungeons and extended story) is added. I don't like remakes of the likes of FF 1/2/3 where the only new thing is a bigger color palette and a cinematic OP.

Remake the game when its worth it. Like Final Fantasy VII for PS3 would be incredibly different (graphically, and in a lot of ways gameplay-wise) and thus deserving to be remade, unless of course it's incredibly half assed and released too early but thats not really the fault of the remake itself, just the company behind it.

I hardly consider those Final Fantasy I's and II's for the Nintendo DS to be remakes, more like ports with a few added bonuses. A Final Fantasy VII released for the PS3 would definately be a full-fledged remake, if the tech demo was any indication.

In the end, why wouldn't you want a remake? If you prefer the classic, no ones making you buy and play the remake and, assuming it isn't poorly made, it's a good way to get new players interested in older games. Plus if the remake is really good, you might just end up having a new favorite game (the Resident Evil remake for the Gamecube comes to mind imo).

That's exactly the problem: You'd need the storywriters, hire an orchestra, have Uematsu rewrite the music, and basically redesign a hella lot of things.

If you want to make a large and living world, having one character say the same line during the entire game will simply not work. Even Oblivion kinda fails with the mudcrap adventures What would work is NPCs talking about general stuff and things like the mako reactor explosion. And even gossip about their neighbours with perhaps a wink to older final fantasies. Such things are perfect for hiding easter eggs in.

The prettier the graphics, the stronger the contrast with those traditional battle systems as well. I can't really picture a game looking as good as advent children where in battle you'd have 3 characters standing next to each other running back and forth to deal a single kick every time. It'd be like those real life FF parodies.

the problem i have with remakes is that they often stray too far from the orginal design, and end up being a completly different game, not a simple "remake". there are exceptions but i usually would prefer classic games to be left alone.

It depends, I don't really like remakes because it takes the look and feel away the original had, and sometimes remakes are bound to be worse than the original old-school game.

Hower there is an exception if it provides the same experience and gameplay or better than the original without sacrificing anything.

Games that I wouldn't like to see remade are:

Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3

Super Mario World

Super Mario World: Yoshi's Island

Other Mario Games.

The Classic NES, GB, GBC Zelda Games.

Games I would like to see remade with Updated Graphics as long as it kept the great experience the original had or provided a better experience, and kept the same atmosphere/creepyness the original had would be:

Resident Evil 2

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis

Possibly Resident Evil: Code Veronica

The original Silent Hill game

I'm kind of remaining neutral, leaning towards both sides on this, but I don't see an option in the poll for both so I'm not going to vote

Remakes are a touchy issue,
some will love it but others will hate it.

you can't please everyone.

you got the fanboys who will be like:
'what the f*** have they done!'

and you get the normal peeps:
'yay, nows my chance to play the game for the first time'

I don't really care if it's a remake, it only depends on how the game plays, I prefer some games like Castlevania and Megaman with sprites because most of the time I can better estimate hitboxes with those, some like CS Source are pretty good remakes as they update the game mechanics and graphics.
