Problem With Updating Steam for Half-Life 2 and CS:S in Vista

I've just installed Half-Life 2 on Vista off of My Legit CD's and account. Thing is I need to run a Steam Update and then an Update to Half-Life 2 right after before I can play the Game.

Everytime I attempt to run the Steam Client, it updates to about 11-20%, and then it crashes everytime with This error in the screenshot below:

Can Anyone help me get this installed on Vista, and what do I need to do in order to get this running properly?

Btw, UAC is Disabled on my Computer but the Windows Firewall is Enabled, however I don't think that would cause it to crash. What is or what did I do wrong?

Thanks if anyone can help me

try... logging onto steam, and installing hl2 from there, not from the cd. so, uninstall HL2, then install from steam and let it update from there. it worked for me on vista x64 so i dont think its cuz of vista.

How can I run steam to log in when it crashes? I have to update steam itself before I can even run it or am able to even log in. That's what it crashes on is while it attempts to update Steam.

There must be something I'm not doing right or messing up during install.

Btw, the Hard Drive I'm installing it to is a regular hard drive in an external enclosure connected to my PC Via USB. Would that make any difference or be the cause of my problem?

Thanks if anyone can help me further

sorry bout the misunderstanding. dont know much about harddrives at all. You could either:

a) install it on the harddrive in your computer
b) check Welcome to Steam and goto support and look it up
c) check the steam forums for support too.

:EDIT: I figured it out and solved the problem myself with a little tinkering. It appears that I must have, "Run in Compatibility mode" Disabled, even the "Run in Compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2", then browse to the steam folder and run steam as an Administrator, although UAC was disabled which I don't get.

However Thanks for trying to help Makotech, I really appreciate it

This thread can be closed now if a Moderator or Admin will happily do the deed of closing it for me
