Blizzard Announces StarCraft 2 (PC)

Quote:
Blizzard Announces StarCraft 2 (PC)
Seoul, Korea -- The scene here is an absolute madhouse. I'm parked in the front row of Olympic Stadium in Seoul, Korea, and around me are thousands of screaming fans and press representatives from over 150 news outlets around the world. The setting is the Blizzard WorldWide invitational, and in addition to kicking off a weekend of competitions, Blizzard has just made the announcement fans around the world have waited nearly ten years to hear: Blizzard is resurrecting the revered StarCraft franchise with StarCraft 2.

While addressing the crowd, Blizzard President Mike Morhaime talked about the amazing support Korea has given StarCraft over the years, where the game is practically a national sport and pro players are treated like rock stars. "It was easy for us to decide where (this announcement) should take place," said Morhaime, before showing a short teaser video for StarCraft 2 and then turning over the stage to lead designer Dustin Browder (Command & Conquer and Battle For Middle Earth franchises) to show off game footage.

This announcement is just the beginning of our coverage at the Worldwide Invitational -- check back throughout the weekend, as we'll have more announcements, interviews with Blizzard staff and impressions of the StarCraft footage shown so far.
You may have beaten me to the news but I still have news, I am looking froward to it.

It's difficult for me to get excited.

The graphics reminds me of the Starcraft Mod made for Warcraft III.

Why do I get the feeling of Command and Conquer 3? (New Graphics, but standard uninnovative gameplay)

Great news,if the story is half as good as the original it will still kick ass.Now the graphics look pretty crappy for me,for a top end yet-unreleased game....hope they'll work on that.

I can see the graphics not being a major focus, being that Starcraft's main market is Korea these days, and they'll want to make it run on as many systems as possible to ensure it succeeds StarCraft 1 as the game of choice for major competitive play.

Not that I care really, honestly how many time in an rts game do you actually zoom down to check out all the finer details? Especially in something as frantic as Starcraft can get.

Really been a good year for RTS fans.

SupC, CC3, AoE exspansions, etc etc.. good to see the genre making a comeback.

I just wish, they'll have something truly new.... all of the games have been lacking a little bit in innovation even if SupC was great.. it was almost too heavy for me.

Hope Starcraft 2 will be innovative... doesn't look that much like it though.

Hopefully SC2 will have a dynamic gameplay (not like CnC3 which completely not fitting to progame category) like SC1 and WC3 !
I like sc1 and wc3 cuz tactix and MICRO solves... ))

Finally, a decent announcement, now we just need to prepare for it's arrival assuming it is not delayed, most of the time Blizzard delays games still further after announcement. Unless of course they have been working on it for a while.

YES !!! No World of Starcraft(there were rumors) ! I really hate Blizzard for putting a monthly fee on a game just so they can improve it(tak WoW for example). And now it seems they wanna continue the regular RTS feel of a succesfull game like Starcraft. Wait a minute, Warcraft went till 3 and Starcraft is now at 2. This means that it isnt gonna take long before a WoS will come. Unless ofcourse its gonna take the same time it took for a sequel on Starcraft and that times 3 lol. Thats very long .

Looking at the screen shots this in basically the same Starcraft with better graphics and a few new units, in other words an prettier SC expansion pack.

This made my day :o
And the fact that they are keeping to the original three races is just incredible. Can't wait to play it. This is a definite buy for me even if the graphics aren't top notch.

This is pretty sweet, it sounds like they have been working on it for the last 4-5 years. I am really happy as well that they didn't announce a World of Starcraft MMO.

I honestly can't tell how good or bad the graphics are. I have watched 3 gameplay videos (looking at the graphics in motion) on YouTube and it is hard to judge quality from such a small video (which was taken in a stadium). The graphics engine looks like an upgraded not-as-cartoony WarCraft 3 engine with better lighting (all the StarCraft units actually have decent shadows!). I really hope that Blizzard does add extra DirectX 10 features since if this game ends up being as good as the original or better at least it will have the capability of looking better with new hardware (it might need to last for 9 more years before its sequel is released).

The gameplay looks pretty good with a lot of counters and balances. The new shield effects and watching the zealots rush in is pretty sweet too.
