"Ported" is the wrong word. They're enhanced remakes, kind of like FF3 on the NDS.

IGN: Square Enix Announces Star Ocean: First Departure

Quote:
There's just no stopping the Playstation Portable this year. All kinds of spectacular titles have been announced for the Sony handheld system, and today's Square Enix press event held no exceptions. The original Super Famicom Star Ocean is reborn as Star Ocean: First Departure and it's headed for PSP.

Along side the announcements for Star Ocean: Second Evolution and Star Ocean 4, First Departure is a refurbished version of the very first Star Ocean, complete with 3D graphics and CG cutscenes, not unlike the retelling of Final Fantasy III that was released on the Nintendo DS last year. Although no actual gameplay footage was shown, the screenshots we have here give a glimpse of what to expect.

The Star Ocean series is one of Square Enix's lesser known franchises that has received critical acclaim in the press, and a cult following among RPG fans. By mixing sci-fi and fantasy, the series has it's own unique footprint amongst the Square Enix family of games.

No release date was announced for any of the new Star Ocean games, but fret not. We expect details to start flowing in the coming months, so stay tuned.
IGN: Square Enix Announces Star Ocean: Second Evolution

Square Enix is going PSP crazy. Along side the announcement for Star Ocean: First Departure at their press conference today was the announcement Star Ocean: Second Evolution, a retelling of the RPG classic released on the original Playstation.

When considering the build-up to Star Ocean 4, potential new fans may want to have an opportunity to explore the back story of critically acclaimed series. Second Evolution will give them just that, along with an updated presentation. This title is getting the same upgrades that First Departure is getting, complete with fresh CG cutscenes.

The Star Ocean series is one of Square Enix's lesser known franchises that has received critical acclaim in the press, and a cult following among RPG fans. By mixing sci-fi, fantasy, and real-time battles, the series has it's own unique footprint amongst the Square Enix family of games.

No release date was announced for any of the new Star Ocean games, but fret not. We expect details to start flowing in the coming months, so stay tuned.
Not to mention that there's a new Star Ocean coming out on the PS3.

Very nice being a PSP owner and rpg fanatic.

I simply love Star Ocean the 2nd Story on PSX cuz of story, characters and music and battle system.

That's the beauty of the game IMO! There are only 2 kind of people who've played the game. They either love it or hate it !

Neither Chrono Trigger nor Secret of Mana looked very good on the SNES, but I'd gladly pay $50 to see them both on the Nintendo DS!, maybe $30 each if I had to buy them seperately.

Graphics aren't the most important thing to a game, think of all the FF VII fanboys!

Hahaha, the bugs in SO:ST are hilarious! For example...

1 - During battle, your character voices will magically become someone else's...the horror of Celine sounding like Claude.../shudder.

2 - I've had monsters get stuck in the air as they fall from the sky at the start of a battle .

I know I got a few more, but its been 5 years since I've played it. Now it sits on my completed shelf, never to be touched again...hopefully .

I never played any of the Star Ocean games, so this is more than welcome. It looks like they're getting the FF1 and FF2 treatment though.

Well, it just looks like it has some updated 2d, more FMV and better music, that's it. Not a full remake as they did with FF3 for the DS.
