Sonic Team, Learn2Code
Maybe I was being optimistic, maybe I was delusional, but I went out and got Sonic for the 360. I got to the title screen and so far so good, and the menu was sleek too. I was also extremely pleased with the introduction because it reminded me of the original Sonic cartoon, and it seems he's dropped off a few years in age from Sonic Adventure 2 which is good. But the coding... wtf. How did this even get past beta, let alone released? Tails: This annoying little yellow guy will CONSTANTLY collide with all NPCs, railing, bridges, buildings, and any part of the environement. To remedy this he jumps up and down making little "Ah!" sounds until you move. It makes talking to NPCs in town a chure and I nearly turned the game off. Sometimes Tails gets so stuck he falls through the world going "Ahhhhhhh!" and then respawns, only to be jumping up and down again until you move. Fast speed levels: I've only played one of these so far, but basically everything gets accelerated and you run at super speed... only to collide with trees.. and rocks. Its impossible to manuever without getting hurt, so the aim of these levels is to get rings before each collision so you don't die. Camera angle: Something is seriously wrong with Sonic Team, as they seem to think, "Oh, seeing how everyone likes Sonic because he's fast, lets make the camera just as fast." The damn thing swirls around at the least helpful times, changing the angle for no reason, and usually throws you offcourse and kills you if you aren't careful. Run speed: Sure moving fast has always been a part of Sonic... but when I get hit (which is something I'll rant about shortly), about 10 rings drop, and then its your job to pick some up before they vanish. The only problem is that you move so unneccesarily fast (there's no build up period, he starts fast now), you find yourself running in circles missing the rings. =/ Taking damage: Traditionally when Sonic takes damage you bounce back a bit with a sort of ching sound as your rings fall to the ground. No more! Infact there's no bounce, you just fall over. And it takes about 3 seconds to get up which really kills the pace of the game, already hindered by f'd camera angles and worse. And usually its not even your fault, you just get flung into walls. Iblis Trigger: Most annoying term ever. Whoever made up iblis fails. Silver: He's the new guy, looks sort of the opposite of shadow and is.. the colour silver. Anyways, after a few levels you get to fight this guy, and he has the most retarded, overpowered move I've ever seen, that makes the fight not about timing, but just being lucky that you don't get chained with it. Basically he does a move where anything in range will be caught in a anti-gravity field and lifted off the ground. This move has NO warning. Anyone who fights this guy will get 1-shot on the first attempt, because you see rings in front of you and as a reflex you go to pick them up, only to be caught in his field before you even get their and killed. If you're lucky you'll be able to pick up a ring in time, but if you're unlucky he'll throw you straight up, and then you'll fall back into the next field he does, so its game over. Its a buggy and retarded fight. K I'm done.

IMO there hasn't been a good sonic game since SonicCD and my favourite to this day remains Sonic and Knuckles..

Nothing wrong with the coders, but with the designers and Director. The coders did great job, if you ever watch the credits when finishing a game. you will see that the programmers (Coders) not greater than 10 people, but the art, music, cameras..etc takes the majority of the project, obviously the villain here is the Director(s) of the game. |

I'm reminded of the Sonic Heroes boss fights. Most of them involve auto-home-button-mash =P

I couldn't stomach Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast, I gave it to Charline, and I'm glad I haven't purchased another Sonic game except the mistake of buying that 3D sonic for the Genesis, which also sucks. Sonic CD roxx, after that, forget it... Yeah, I'm agreeing with others...

The best Sonic games were on the Mega Drive/Master Systems in my opinion. It's all well in good saying "zomg learn2code" and my reply to that would be "Could you do a better job? Do you have the qualifications to improve it code wise?" No I don't think so. It may have been a bad game but in time things can improve. They can only work with what they have. It may even spell the end of Sonic as we know it. Some titles can't carry on for years. Maybe its time we see no more Sonic.

How about we're customers and we can and should expect quality for our money? People have mentioned a number of bugs that should have been dealt with, for crying out loud they made a number of good 3D platformers, the Jak series, Ratchet & Clank series, Sly Cooper, they were done in 3D and were great games, so why couldn't there be decent 3D Sonic games? There are programmers capable of making 3D Sonic titles.

I hated the camera on Sonic Adventures, a lot. Maybe if it supported multiple views and changing the views on the fly, I'd have enjoyed the game a bit more? I didn't like Sonic 3s death trap areas where you had to reset the game if you got caught in them, it ruined the game IMSHO. Sonic and Knuckles wasn't bad, but it was just an upgrade on Sonic 2, IMSHO...

I loved all of the Sega Sonic games, Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles, Spinball, and 3D were all great games and I played them all to death...but in seems that have gone downhill from there. Maybe they should just go back to the old formula, and make some new 2D sonic games? Maybe not though, as they made the Sonic Racers game for the PSP...and it wasn't very good at all It's funny that there hasn't been a good sonic game in how long...yet people keep on buying them. LOL.

The number of copies sold does not indicate the quality of the product. EA anyone?

That's not relevant to the topic at hand.

I've played the 360 version though, and I sat through more loading screens than I actually played the game. The entire Sonic franchise has been fundamentally broken since Sonic Adventure, and with every game the problems just get more exacerbated. If they want to make another 3D Sonic, they might as well go back to the drawing board instead of following up on copy-and-pasting Sonic into Super Mario 64. |

Sonic Adventure was great, IMO. Frankly, it's my favourite Sonic game. And that was after playing the older Sonic games. Sonic Adventure, however, had some issues, but they were forgiveable, because the game excelled in many areas. In SA2 they however fixed the wrong issues (yay, you HAVE to play as Knuckles now), but it was still good. In Sonic Heroes they again changed a lot, but the core gameplay was still flawed, now with added non-brakeing characters (so they'd run off the cliff after the jump; at least in SA its possible to stop Sonic to a halt). Sonic Heroes was still kinda fun though... but after that, they completely lost it. Details not needed, as everyone knows them.

Sonic team really has got to get a new team of coders. Has anyone played Phantasy Star Universe? The buggiest P.O.S I've ever played online. Not to mention they seem to have no idea what they're doing when it comes to server maintenance...
