Ken Kutaragi resigns

Story here.

Quote:
Ken Kutaragi, 56, an icon among gamers, will step down as Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.'s chairman and group chief executive, Tokyo-based Sony said Thursday. He will be replaced by Kazuo Hirai, who is now president and chief operating officer of the division.

...Sony executives would not comment beyond a news release Thursday, and representatives refused to discuss whether the departure was related to performance.

...interesting, he's done insanely well for himself with playstation, one wonders where he can go from here to improve upon such a record. Probably a good thing for SONY, the public had grown somewhat weary of the short and egotistical gremlin.

I'm waiting for the fanboi's to take this as a "sign" that PS3 is doomed

yeah me too... i was trying to explain what i was thinking about the PS3 in some threads but some sony fanboiīs just got me wrong(thatīs normal)

many big companies are developing theyīre games for other plattform too because they arenīt shure about the PS3 success.

and now with this news i think is clear.

because Ken Kutaragi is well known as the "father of the Playstation" and why heīs quiting from Sony now? because heīs 56???

No way!!! at least not at this moment.

I think the guy is a brilliant futurist, and was able to pick the correct trends that would lead to commercial success with the PS1 and PS2, I also believe he has done the same for the PS3.

I dont think this will be the doom of Sony, Although I think whoever takes over the Hardware design will be more of an accountant than a visionary like Kutaragi.

I think the only issue with the PlayStation consoles right now is that a lot of gamers who are faithful to other brand names obviously dislike this console... and are trying to destroy it completely by any means necessary.

The industry needed a man like Kutaragi to push the envelope further. I do, however, feel that Kutaragi misjudged how people would react to the PS3, thinking everybody would understand it's hefty price tag and just buy it. Sure, it's a lot of things (Blu-Ray player, runs Linux out-of-the-box), but all these things are targeted more at the tech-savy user. The general gaming population doesn't understand the significance of these things. This is where the Wii wins the battle. The Xbox 360 is somewhere in the middle, with not much innovation, but good services, good games, and powerful hardware, and the price isn't that hard for most people to swallow in one purchase.

I don't think the PS4 is going to be as big of a leap forward as PS3 was to PS2.

runawayprisoner, for once in your life you've posted something useful.

Seriously though, I wish that idiots would give it a rest with the "PS3 has issues" thing. It has none. The only thing "plaguing" the PS3 is a bunch of idiot bloggers and amateur journalists who realise that posting anti-Sony BS on their websites will get them plenty of hits.

The only console right now being plagued by "various issues" is the 360. Whether it's the non-existent Japanese market, or the consistent hardware issues that remain to be fixed, updates that brick the machine... you get the message.

He was a visionary with the PlayStation. The entire games industry owes him for crafting that console and laying the groundwork for the revolution that happened within gaming within the last ten years (with the quality of games increasing and mainstream acceptance of the hobby.)

I think a couple of posters here sound like Sony Fanboys unhappy with the PS3 sales and wanting to attack anyone who doesn't care for the PS3...

I could care less if the PS3 fails or succeeds, I'm "guessing" it'll succeed because it is a solid system, but I'm uninterested in it for numerous reasons...

1) I don't care for blu ray, I didn't buy my PS2 for DVD, I had a DVD player before I bought a PS2, I still don't use my PS2 for DVD unless my DVD player rejects a DVD I want to watch, it seems to dislike a couple of Dukes of Hazzard DVDs I purchased from Wal Mart and the Two Towers DVD I bought from Electronics Boutique.

2) There haven't been any PS3 exclusives I enjoy, I really haven't seen that many games on any console that really impress me that much, let alone on the PS3. It took until 2005 for me to buy a PS2, although I should have bought one earlier.

3) I'm not spending that much on a console. I paid $229 for a Playstation in 1996, and it came with a game, I might pay $250 for a Wii, but I'm even waiting on buying a Wii, maybe a year or two...

I've purchased 4 Playstations, 1 Playstation 2, and have 100 games between both systems, so I can hardly be considered "anti Sony", but at the moment, I'm uninterested in a PS3, and throwing insults and calling me anti Sony isn't going to change my mind.

May I suggest those who love the PS3 stick to playing PS3 games and refrain from preaching to people who think differently. I'm not interested in selling Wiis to Playstation 3 fans, so please don't try to sell me a system I don't want.

'k?

And now seriously industrian.... and i mean it really serious..
i was never ungry with a member here but it seems youīre the first one to get me at that point.

i can post "MY" opinion when i want and if you donīt like it ignore it.. but stop with that bul***t... if youīre a playstation fan boi(i really donīt care about it) then fine but stop writing the same bull***t over and over...

i donīt know how old you are but you are acting like a kid!
this are consoles nothing to worry about.. in few years the ps3 will be replaced with a new one and nobody(even you) will even talk about it.

cīmon! open your eyes and look whatīs happening right now. the ps3 is great and cool console no doubt about it but is not worth for any discussion of that kind.

ken(the playstation king) is gone! and there most be something behind this thatīs fact.. i saw some news about Nintendo wanted Ken to join them. so wait for some new rumors about your lovely console.

so stop that sh*** and btw.. am not a Idiot... think twice before you write this kind of bull***ts.

in my opinion Stupid people are the ones that call others "Stupid" they do so because they arenīt able to recognize there stupidness or because they feel so.

Exclusive: Outgoing Sony exec Kutaragi already planning PS4

TOKYO — Playstation inventor Ken Kutaragi, who will retire as chairman and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. on June 19, is already thinking ahead to Playstation 4 and beyond.

In an exclusive interview with EE Times, Kutaragi said: "As a matter of course, I have the vision of Playstation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network."

Thursday's (April 26) announcement of Kutaragi's "graduation" from SCEI was widely viewed here and across the consumer electronics industry with surprise. Kutaragi said he proposed his resignation to Sony's board of directors on Thursday.

Kutaragi said he previously turned over to Sony's PS3 design team his vision for reducing costs along with design models extending about two years into the future. "Now I'm ready to start working with a much wider world," Kutaragi said.

The outgoing Sony executive said he will maintain an amicable relationship with Sony, but added that future projects will be largely independent of Sony.

From its inception, Kutaragi said he had a vision for the Playstation franchise. The roadmap that led to PS3 was always clear in his mind, he said. But when introduction of PS3 was delayed by a blue-violet laser shortage, "I could not talk about the next step. We've introduced PS3 in Europe, so now I can openly talk about" future plans, he said.

Creating a new world on the network is the next challenge Kutaragi has in mind, following the desgin and development of computer entertainment on the Playstation. "The design concept of the Cell processor is the network processor," he stressed. When the PS3 was introduced last year, Kutaragi said the network environment was not ready for a net-based game console.

"Now it has become possible, so why not enter?" he said.

That articles stupidity is summed up pretty well in the last paragraph:

Quote:
As Ken Kuturagi moves into the next phase of his career at Sony, as the company's senior technology adviser, he would do well to play a few games on the Wii, and consider how the lessons of this device can help drag Sony away from an even greater defeat.
Stupidity at its finest...
