Duke Nukem 3d in retrospective " Damn the 90's!"

Hey i was thinking.. I remember back in like 96 I had Duke 3d and me and this kid
that I went to high school with we modem played duke.. ahaha fun times.. I remember I had a pentium 75 and he had a 486 dx 100 or something like that, maybe a 66. I remember we both had two phone lines and used to chat while we fragged eachother.. ahha He had to shrink his screen window down a little for it to be playable.. anyone remember that ? ahaha letterboxing your game? Yah i had to take my BBS offline in order to play but it was worth it.. I had a pretty good BBS.. Loads of users and then i telnetted it.. plus it helped to be friends with the creator of the software =] I would start a bbs again but i dont feel like using my system resources to run virtual nodes and telnet it.. ahaha Id rather playquake 4.. am i selfish? Anyways .. back to duke.. I loved that game.. I mean doom was hella cool but duke made me laugh.. " I'll rip off your head and sh*y down your throat" or " Damn those alien bast*rds for shotting up my ride." ahaha great stuff... I guess thats why we all turned out so good is because we grew up playing that crap ahah. All this coming from a guy who used to link his gameboy up to friends and play mortal kombat in puke green at high school. Damn the 90's!

Ps anyone have any good oldschool duke screenshots?

I remember playing Duke Nukem 3d with my old Pentium133, that was long before I had grasped the concept of using the mouse to look around.

Can you run Duke Nukem 3D in XP? I tried running Wolfenstein 3D and it crashed my PC... Oh well, I try some stuff tomorrow, the DOS emulator might work, although I know it didn't like Doom *original DOS version*, at least Doom 95 still seems to run on XP...

I was at the Primary School when I went with my friend to meet a couple of younger kids playing Duke 3D. It was 1996 and it was the very first time I saw a 3D-shooter. It looked so cool then.

It should work on XP. At least you'll need VDMSound-emulator and maybe some other fixes.

Now it's possible to play Duke in OpenGL http://hackerman93045.tripod.com/, it's still under construction, but give it a try!

at some point I even made a few levels for this game... however, I didn't know how to make doors so they were just one huge big room.
Fun to do, though.

I lost those levels... too bad, not that they were any good, but I'd like to seem them again anyways.

google jfduke3d. its a source port for duke 3d. runs perfect for me on xp, there are high resolution packs and it also has support for several add on packs for duke 3d (duke in dc, nuclear winter, etc.). an alternative but slightly more complicated method is to use vdmsound to launch duke 3d. its similar to dos box but its a little more time consuming with the setup but ive had more success with it than dos box. let me know if you need more help, ive been able to get shadow warrior, blood, redneck rampage, and a few others to run perfectly on xp. another website you might want to check out if you do the vdmsound method is this. if you try the vdmsound method, DONT follow that guides suggestions for the music and soundcard settings (step 8), they dont work that well. ill post the settings i found that make the sound run correctly if you want to try vdmsound.

as far as wolfenstein goes, try getting either the latest version of doomsday or zdoom, both are doom source ports. i use both but doomsday has far more enhancements available. you wont be able to run wolfenstein directly on it, there is a TC out there called wolfendoom. thats what you want, im positive it runs fine on doomsday, im not sure about zdoom, ive never tried it. wolfendoom has a ton of custom levels aside from the original stuff in the game, google wolfendoom for more info.
