Age of Empires 2: Online play

I thought id give the game a go after getting a Broadband connection. However Im not sure how to use the multiplayer mode to play with a friend. Does anyone know where I can find a online guide to the game? Even better just give me advice here. Thanks.

Zone.com server doesn't work anymore

nonono dont use gamespy,
download hamachi
and tell ur friend to download it also
it creates a virtual lan between u and him and u can create the network (its very simple) and then u can play together thru lan in game

My brother used to play that alot.
He just used to go on IRC, local age2 channels, and theres loads of ppl playing.

To play online you just need your friend´s IP. You ask him to create a multiplayer game and copy his IP into join multiplayer game.

You can also use hamachi, but theres some overhead that, and you really dont need it.

You can also play by IP I think. I can't remember, it's been years since I saw AOE2, but I vaguely remember a place to just type an IP.

i tried playing by ip with my friend but it NEVER works. it really sux. i could never get it working.

that's because it's nearly impossible to get to know your own external ip adress. That's the one you'll need. The one windows tells you about is the internal one...

I frist tried using the IP thing where you input the host's IP adress but didnt work for me either. I would have thought this game would have a simple connect and play online mode.

Ok, here's the answer to ur problem.

It's true, microsoft closed down their sever for Age of Empires II (AoE II) online gameplay. However, an independent one was established: Gamepark. This is the URL for the site: GamePark.eu Admittedly, it is foreign (Czech i think?) but that never stopped an eager player.

I'm going to cover the basics to get you going now.
Most people play AoE II with the expansion pack: The Conquerors Expansion, it is also recommended that you play with a downloadable patch which will prevent online opponents from applying cheats (this patch also permits you to play the game without the disc). This can be found and downloaded from the Gamepark site itself along with other necessary files such as the Client Application required to host and join games on the web before entering AoE II itself. Altogether it is relatively simple, the most difficult obstacle you are likely to encounter is ensuring there is a path for the game through your firewall(s). If you need assistance there is a comprehensive guide on the site and furthermore there are friendly people like us in the Gamepark forum.
