This is why PC gamming will never die

Now this is what i call NextGen. Check out these new screenshots from the recent Games for Windows event.

Age of Conan

Crysis

Hellgate: London

Shadowrun

World In Conflict

I might have to put my PS3 on hold for a PC upgrade, i'm not sure i can pass on World In Conflict and Crysis Those two games are looking stunning, World In Conflict is an RTS btw ^^

Exactly the reason for me to go back to a console again after having upgraded my pc last summer. I've had my shot of WW2 games and currently there's only a few titles I'm looking forward to, the ones mentioned above aren't on my list. I'd rather see a nice racegame make use of the pc hardware available, or perhaps a good adventure/rpg game. Perhaps Bioware's Mass Effect will be good, if it will be ported from the 360 that is.

Age of Conan doesn't look that impressive, nothing I haven't seen before. Just a lot of foliage, good lighting in a jungle, and some water reflections. Nothing revolutionary, in fact, have a good look at the textures, they look muddy and dated.

Hellgate London? Gates to Oblivion look a lot nicer, this a console port? Cause it certainly doesn't look like anything not possible on PS3 or 360.

As for Shadowrun, I sure hope they've got more interesting areas than the ones shown in these pictures, they look rather bland to me.

The only two games that look like a step forward from what we've seen already are World in Conflict and Crysis. They looks massive and immersive.

I'm guessing that the people who think that $600 USD for a PlayStation 3 is expensive will develop a form of "selective amnesia" when they spend $3000+ on getting a PC just to run those games (that either are being released on, or could be made on the aforementioned console.)

Crysis looks awesome as ever, as anyone who watched this movie will tell you.

Thats cause they ARE textures of dated mud ^^. But yeah i agree with you. It has a pretty good draw distance though, and its an MMORPG, its normal for those types of games to have lowered graphics.

But what about Alan Wake? That is something diferent and new.

If this is the future of pc gaming, it'll be exactly like it's been for the last few years save the graphical update, and that means my money would be better spent on a console

also, yes, industrian, I realised that after my last upgrade which is why I got a PS2 instead of an intermediate pc upgrade that would cost more and deliver less.
Last time I upgraded my PC was in 2003, that was near-complete replacement (new case, mobo, processor, ram, gfx card). I think it cost me about 600 (tss ) euros at the time. With that I was able to run new games for about 2 years. Not exactly a console life-span. And don't get me started about the diversity. So, in late 2004 I bought a PS2 for 1/4th of that price

Now, I do think 600 euros is a lot for just a console though (yeah yeah, the ps3 can do more, but I didn't ask for it, did I?) - I use the PC for more, and frankly, my current PC is more than adequate for everything that's not high-end gaming (except for some HD movie formats). Same for my laptop (which is just as old). Even the PC I had before that would probably still suffice, allthough most likely a bit too slow for my tastes (for WinXP at least - it was a P3 800 with 384MB of SDRAM).

Add to that the great diversity that can be seen in the shots above, and you've got the bottom line:

-WAY too expensive (making an already expensive PS3 peanuts in comparison)
-WHAT games?! Oh, THAT again.

But, IF I'm gonna upgrade my PC, which I'll eventually want to do, I want to do it good anyway.

oh, and, that is why PC gaming CAN die, and why it almost did. Thanks in part to the very same Microsoft, by the way

Ah, didn't know it was (just another) MMORPG, in that case, it looks pretty good, not the Oblivion draw distance of course but that's forgivable. It does need to appeal to a larger audience and should run on lower spec systems. In that case, they better make the gameplay is unique, there's plenty of games to spend some monthly budget on these days.

@ Industrian: hehe, well you have a point there, I personally would rather pick a console and be done for it for the first couple of years.

Samor, you hit the nail on its head. I have a nice Pentium 4 3.0 here which I hope will be sufficient for about everything. I doubt it will have any problems with HD content, so for that there's no need to upgrade either. And why I would like my videos to take 30 seconds less before they'll be encoded is beyond me.

Oh comon, the PC exceeds any console in almost ALL gamming categories except for platform games. It won't be any diferent now.

RTS, FPS, FPS/RPG, TPS, FPS/TPS/RPG/Online (Hellgate ), Racing, adventure, action adventure, MMORPGs, etc...

You guys are beeing a bit too harsh on the PC. I've spent way more time on the PC then in consoles in these past years, sure the consoles do get alot more attention in they're first 1 or 2 years, but after that PCs easily provide more, and better, entertainment. At a price of course, but imo, if you manage to buy the things at the right time it never gets too expensive.

That's complete and utter bullcrap.
It goes for some genres, but you didn't make distinctions in the kind of RPG's and racing games and forgot to mention a ton, like sports, action, 3rd person, dancing/rhythm games, adv, stg (shootemups), shooting (lightgun-type), fighting, beatemup, pinball, quiz games, flightsims, puzzle, platform, and I can come up with more.

The problem is PC gamers think it's more diverse because they forgot all the other genres, not to mention the games that don't fit in one.

There's more to it than hack-slash and shoot-kill, y'know

I did mention Third Person, it also has tons of sports games, also dancing/rhythm, you can buy the dancing pads if you want too, i did mention adventure, not sure what stg is, there is pinball (the best pinball game i ever played was on the PC, i still have the original copy somewhere ), quiz games, flight sims (the best ones are on the PC), puzzle games, etc...

I forgot about fighting, your right about that, Fighting and Platforming is pretty much where the consoles exceed over the PC.

For me, if the pc game devs could provide console style rpgs, fighting games, and some good platformers, then I would not have to look at the consoles.

no, you mentioned third person SHOOTER
which is another shooter.

sports are available on all platforms, I give you that.
dancing/rhythm games are mostly homebrew, adventure != ADV, STG = shootemup, Pinball died on PC, PC has quiz games? - wow!, Ace Combat is not on PC, and puzzle games only exist in Flash.

What console gamers forget is that PC has more games then the ones you pickup on shelfs

Do you know a third person game thats not a third person shooter? Unless you mean third person hack n slash games, but heck even they exist on the PC, even Monster Hunter freendom is going for the PC.

Not only, but thats not neceserlly bad now is it? They're free for example. Not to mention there are Free MMOs of dancing/rhythm on the PC.

i think it died on the consoles as well.

Also Ace Combat is not a Sim, its an arcade game, and those types of games also exist on the PC, although not Ace Combat, and not as good as it , of course.

oh yeah, that's called indie/homebrew. Actually if we're going to talk about that, it's a whole different story, and I'm very supportive of the kind. I THOUGHT we were kinda looking at the commercial future of gaming, and the kind you posted in the screenshots. And I don't need to upgrade my PC to enjoy indie/homebrew anyways

never rolled a Katamari, my friend?

see my reply to your other quote - I'm quite the fan of indie/homebrew and I consider it as something entirely different than the WAR/RTS/DX10POWAH games that were shown in this thread.

they exist, in homebrew, again.

Well, also commercially (Crimson Skies), and the same goes for Pinball (Pro Pinball series), but most of those games are from quite a few years ago, and we were talking about how it is now, not how it was y
