Aeris or Aerith

in FFVII, is her name Aeris or Aerith? I had never heard of Aerith before checking Wikipedia, and they are so sure that it is Aerith, it is locked from editing. Just want to hear your opinions...

Does it really matter?
She dies whether her name is Aeris or Aerith.
Either way,Aeris has a nicer ring to it.

I think it's the difference between the Japanese and Western versions.
