The first third person shooter?

It's been a while since I've started a thread but what the heck. I was talking with a buddy of mine and for some reason the discussion turned to gaming and we we're wondering what was the first FPS ever made. We eventually agreed Wolfenstein 3D was it (unless there are some obscur games I'm not aware of)

We then tried to find what was the first Third Person Shooter... blank... I can't come up with any old TPS... maybe Tomb Raider? Third Person Shooters were never my genre of games but I'd like to know what you guys think the first one was? Thanks

Yeah I remember, those are good times. I think it is named vector, but I am mostly wrong. And, if I remember correctly, you can switch between fps and third person with a frame tank in white frame and black background.

mm... I think you've taken this wrong... CMIIW, but... Chrono is stating the first third person shooter not first person shooter..
At first, I also read first person shooter
anyway, I don't know about the first 3rd person shooter, but the first that I played was Tomb Raider.. and it's quite good, but it's beginning to lose its magic nowadays...IMHO

I'm not sure what the first 3rd person shooter was (since I don't play those kinds of games) but I played fps games when I was a kid and the first one I ever played was long before Wolfenstine 3d. I don't remember the name of the game but I use to play it at the arcade within a pizza place back in the 80's and it was black and white and had been there since before I could remember so at least the early 80's.

PS. This would be considered a real first person shooter since it was simular in game play to Wolfenstine 3d where you had guns and killed things (in this it was robots) and went from level to level.

I did mention of the vector game being able to switch out into a 3rd person frame tank and shoot at people right?

Are you talking about Battlezone?... I've never considered it as a FPS since you werent really playing as a human...but a tank... I guess it fits the description though
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlezone

Wikipedia has a nice section for FPS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_person_shooter

Too bad there 3rd Person Shooter section isnt as well documented
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_person_shooter

All the old shooter games are third person shooters. (Like contra) but if you mean the first thing that was similar to tomb raider (looking at the back of a 3d polygon character as they shoot projectiles) it will take me some time to remember the name, but I believe it was made by namco.
