Judging from the various other polls I've seen, I think the Wii will end up being the most popular console (at the very least, for a year or two). I think the Xbox 360 will come in second and the PS3 in third. The price is a major stumbling block, and the lack of consoles on launch, Blu-ray issues, etc. doesn't help them either.

I agree with this although when it's set and done, I think Sony will win the Console Wars once again but that would mean making up 2 years of probably slow sales in about the next 7-10 years when the PS4 might come out. That's only if Blu-ray hits big and prices of HD TVs come down as well since all of these things may need to synchronize since they're symbiotic. The technology is still too new and pricey for the everyday person although not for the technology geek.

well, seeing as how xbox 360 is the exact same thing as the xbox, but with newer hardware... (same games pretty much too)

Sony will probably make a slow start in the short term due to the relative cost and current diode yield problems. Although the PS3 will be released last, I doubt that Sony will be third in terms of units sold for very long. With strong developer support, 1st or at least 2nd is highly likely after a year or two. I have a feeling that the success of the PS2 may not be recreated due to better competition from the rivals this time round.

Xbox 360 has a big head start in all territories with an installed userbase, but will need to make some headway in Japan if it wants to maintain second place. The system will continue to sell well in the US and Europe. After an pretty unspectacular launch, decent games are now coming out steadily for the system.

Wii is a gamble that may pay off hugely or may relegate it to third. The excellent E3 showing has generated a lot of hype, so with the cheap price, second place is likely and first place is not impossible. Many 360/PS3 owners may buy a Wii as their second system for the first-party exclusives. Wii will have a ~4 month head start on PS3 in Europe as well. If Nintendo can recreate or better it's success with the DS system, then we could see a rival to Sony.

I really have no idea as of now, it's just a very strange generation. I really hope Sony knows what they're doing, they took one hell of a gamble. The price tag is going to hold them back for a while. It looks like Sony might even lose it's mainstream audience of all ages. I really hope they can make up their losses, because if they can't, the future of the PlayStation looks slim at best.

The Wii has a very good chance of seeing many sales, due to the low price and neat controller. But how will consumers react to the controller? Will they play it so much that their arm will get tired? Will developers give it the cold shoulder because of the hardware?

The Xbox 360 doesn't really have a whole lot that's new so to speak, but it's a mighty powerful system. I would say the Xbox 360 isn't as future proof as the PS3, but it looks like things are getting better. Get some more killer exclusives and it could give the PS3 a run for it's money.

To be honest its very hard to tell. 360 has a pretty damn good start and it seems to be selling ok except for japan, but then again Sony might still be able to catch up once they start manufacturing some real number of consoles and if its fan base didn't drop much. Free online gamming is a plus to console sales, but then again the price tag is not. Hard to tell really.

As for nintendo, i have no idea if it will sell well or not, that type of gaming isn't for everyone.

It's not for people who spend six hours a sitting on a game, that's for sure. Variety is the spice of life.

Very well written opinion . I personally think most views are valid, each console has its strengths and weaknesses, and I'm sure the rankings will change around a bit during their lifecycles.

Well, you actually have to considered the bias opinions of fanboys too, as they hold up the majority of the consumers. From the beginning of Famicon, Nintendo has established its huge fanbase across the world. You have to acknowledge that Nintendo has alot of good games up their sleaves too, such as Mario, metroid, and Zelda. Of course their superior position got knocked off during the N64 times, but the supporter population is still big.

For Xbox360, well, the original xbox probably sold in good numbers in US, but it was hit hard in Japan. It was to the point like boycotting the xbox from entering the japanese borders. and japan is a huge market. If xbox360 can't get a good market share in Japan right now, they are not gonna do good when wii and ps3 comes out. Despite how good the NA market went out, losing it in Japan is disastrous.

Ps2 is a good product, right? And it captures alot of audiences too. Buying the PS3 is like Buying the N64 after super nintendo because they feel that it is safe and it is a quality guarantee due to the fact that the previous console is such a success.

I know this is a very bias opinion, but it is also these bioased opinions that would make a console succeed or fail. Sometimes considerring its success might not be the +/- factors, its the fanbase.

Sorry guys I have to go with Microsoft first. Sony is good but nothing beats the XBox Live with its download ability. demos, trailers, addons...

That's a pretty shallow reason to get a system. "OMG dude, I'm getting an XBox 360 because I can download trailers, demos and have addons!" All systems nowadays and for the future will all have the ability for that but what it comes down to is the games. If the games are severly lacking and I mean quality not quantity, then the system is going to bomb and bomb hard. WGAF about demos and trailers.

Sony isn't stupid. They will do a major marketing campaign which will guarantee their success.
Side note : Does anyone wonder about how many nintendo fans are at gamefaqs ? It's like 80% of USA are nintendo fans (That's no offence ofcourse, unless you think being attached to the N letter is an offence )

I love it how people like to critisise Sony by saying "I want a game console not a media centre/Blu-Ray player/etc" and then say something like that.

I think Nintendo is going to take the early lead in the console war. While most people say they may get a ps3/360 if such and such occurs, many people seem to be planning on getting a Wii regardless.

However, I think the ps3 will win out in the end. Lots of people are complaining about the price, but you must remember how long the next gen console war is going to last - I'm guessing at least 5 years. I'm sure that we will see a price drop or two in the first few years (hell, I didn't get a ps2 until it hit $150). The ps3, I predict, will be slow out of the gate, but once it gets a number of decent titles behind it (dmc4, mgs4, etc) and the price drops a bit, sales will easily overcome the 360.

The 360, on the other hand, seems set to do exactly what its predecessor did - act as a platform for pc ports and a halo box. Unless the 360 gets some good Japanese-style games behind it, it's not going to matter whether it got a head start or not on the console war.
