Keep fighting until you get diminishing returns, then go to another area.
Rinse and repeat.

Just walk though the areas without trying to avoid fights, look everywhere for chests, and you'll be fine. Final Fantasy series has never been tough, with the exception of the japanese FF4, where the final boss was a lot more difficult than I expected.

First of all, hushy - ff9 gamefaq faqs doesn't have a recommended level anywhere. But thanks anyway.

I am about level 32 with zidane after the part where alexandria is destroyed in the 3rd cd.

If anyone have specific recommended levels I would appreciate it

Why do you need to be told what level you should be at? If the battles are too hard, than just do some leveling with random battles. Otherwise, keep going. It's not that complicated...

I thought no-one was gonna say that. Seriously now, what ever happened to initiative? Do we have to lead all these n00bs by the hand?

read the guides, i'm sure that one of them has a recommended levels thing, they usually do. i didnt check em, so hey, i could be wrong.

but really, why do you even need it? i rushed through FF9. i never once stopped to level up, and i beat this game with ease. FF9 is the easiest FF game ever (beating out even FF7!). and man, i really suck at RPGs. i confess, i've never beaten FF6--i've tried three seperate times (once PSX, twice SNES) and never gotten it. i suck! but hey, i beat FF7/8/9 really easily.

i'm not trying to make fun of you here, i'm just saying (and so are others) that maybe you should just figure it out for yourself. i mean, if you're fighting all these battles and then you get really stuck on a boss, then that tells you not that your levels are too low, but perhaps that your boss fighting strategy isn't so good. so try a different method. the games are meant to be challenging, they dont want you to beat every boss in one hit. but through the main game (not optional areas) they don't usually try to make it too exceedingly difficult.

Yeah, that's what gives the most fun! trial and error!
actually there is NO recommended level (though at level 100 you can easily beat disc 1 :P) that is true...
if you're having a hard time see what you are having a hard time at and improve that... not just the level...
