Blizzard confirms multiple games in the works

When asked by GameSpot if the Warcraft universe was all that's left for the company to mine, chief operating officer Paul Sams said, "No. Absolutely not. We have multiple games in development, currently, they are just not announced… To the outside world--and the reality of it is--we are laser focused on what is the thing right then, but there's a ton of additional focus being put toward these other [games] that are in development."
Reflecting on the existing franchises, Sams emphasized, "World of Warcraft and the Warcraft franchise is not the last and the only franchise we are going to operate within. We have two other very, very key franchises to our company's history and to our company's future success. The Diablo and Starcraft franchises are of the utmost importance to us as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new franchise from us at some time in the future; there's certainly a desire to do so."
A PR rep later expanded on Sams' statement, clarifying that not only were there "multiple games" in development, but that Blizzard was considering "multiple platforms" for those titles. The spokesperson confirmed that the company was looking at both the PS3 and Xbox 360, but that a decision as to which platform might get the nod had not been made.
im particularly interested in the "The Diablo and Starcraft franchises are of the utmost importance to us as well." part, i wonder if this could be a subtle hint that they are making Diablo III :guitar:

They'd be stupid not to. But... who wants to bet it'll be an MMO?

You can easly make an MMO out of Diablo, and seeing the sucess of WoW and the fan base of Diablo they would be stupid not to do so

Just think of all those monthly fees ^^

Really. "single player" is a must.

Diablo2 is already a boderline MMO game anyway so it wouldn't take much to make a Diablo MMO.

i think Diablo has too much of a set storyline to make it MMO, i dont see how they could make all new missions constantly for the game like they are doing with WoW, it wouldnt be right. They are better off making another chapter to the game than one that will be open ended.

Oh come on, if you want to play a nice single player RPG play Baldur's Gate series, Diablos 2 is just a hacknslash heaven for coop gamers. Nothing wrong with that though

But was it because of the gameplay or the story?

I wasn't trying to say that BG series is better than Diablos, but when you'd take a look at the stories I think BG wins hands down. But story isn't everything, even in SP games someone might prefer the more 'mindless' game over one with a lot of text

i spose the story made it more interesting, the action was great fun in diablo II as well, baldurs gate got a bit boring for me

In all ways, BG is slower paced and more open-ended (although, high level monsters in areas tend to act as a barrier). BG is much harder to get into than D2.

Well, they'd be competing with themselves mostly... unless people are in the mood to pay for two different mmos...

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. It has limited # of people in a room, there's an "end", it's a small world, and there's no monthly fee.

How about the presistent characters and the random drops those count as MMO features

A Starcraft 2 or even a World of Starcraft would be godly.

Just a though, perhaps the persistent characters and random drops predated the MMOs? When did the first "real" MMO came out?

As far as I'm concerned Diablo 2 is way better. I played the game for a bit and I didn't really like it. Maybe i'll give it another shot.

I don't think it's about which one is the better game, because both are obviously aimed at a different target group. BG series is aimed at D&D people who love a really good story, who like to take the time for everything and want an epic adventure. They even wrote a novel based on the story of the game.

Diablos is more aimed towards the gamer who prefers to fight a lot and not really bother with all the rules involved with D&D and who prefer going on a hack and slash multiplayer game, with less focus on the story part and characters involved.

Anyway, let's not drift too far off from the main topic, shall we?

Not all MMOs have random drops. EQ for example has a certain # of items that a certain monster can drop at a certain %. At least, that's the way I remember it. Also, an MMO needs a persistant WORLD, not just characters.

So all they have to do is make the character limit larger, more larger enviroments, respawning monsters and a drop list and you have an MMO
