Amazing: Microsoft Endorses Nintendo Wii to Take Down Sony's PS3
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=54528 Amazing: Microsoft Endorses Nintendo Wii to Take Down Sony's PS3 by GamePro Staff | 05/11/2006 | 07:20:18 AM PST In an unprecedented move, top Microsoft executive Peter Moore tells Yahoo News and Reuters that PS3 is over-priced at $500 and $600, and that consumers are going to choose the Xbox 360 and Wii. Is buddying up with Nintendo a smart strategy for Microsoft? In a stunning interview released minutes ago, top Xbox executive Peter Moore told Yahoo News that "people are going to buy two [game systems]....an [Xbox 360] and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3." But it doesn't end there -- Microsoft seems to be actively promoting Nintendo's efforts with the lower-priced Wii system. Moore told Reuters that "people will always gravitate toward a competitively priced product -- like what I believe Wii will be -- with innovative new designs and great intellectual property like Mario, Zelda and Metroid." This is beyond a backhanded compliment or a kind word -- it's an active endorsement of Nintendo and the Wii. Microsoft seems to be allying with Nintendo in an effort to take down Sony's PlayStation behemoth. Will they be successful? Will the informal alliance between Microsoft and Nintendo progress to a new, higher level? We'll keep our ear to the ground and report back soon. |

They've been in support of the Wii for a while, Moore has constantly been quoted saying he can't wait to play Mario or Zelda

How's the market share these days? I imagine PS2 has more than 50%. Even together, x360 and Wii might not be able to beat PS3. But that ofcourse assumes the market share doesn't change for the next-gen.

I think the market share will definitely change, I wouldn't say Sony will lose, but I'd bet on them not having the huge lead they have, Microsoft isn't a newbie to the industry anymore and Nintendo seem to be coming up big this time around.

makes sense... nintendo can capture the japanese market better than MS could... which could make sony focus more on the japanese market, and let some of their guard down on the US, then MS swoops in and steals it from them... or something like that.

I think that (very simple logic =P) the wii could be massive if it's really cheap. It could become a "why not?" product.

Quality x Quantity doesn't make sense. If a price of a PS3 is equal to Wii and 360, BUT I WANT A SONY PS3, I will buy a Playstation 3. But in a commercial view, smells tough.

Consoles are always too overpriced when they come out. It's why I end up waiting until they're a realistic price.

Xbox360 has nothing really for me that would draw me away from my PC. Wii looks very promising right now with it's exclusive titles and cheap price. Wii hardware sales should turn a nice profit for Nintendo too, as the console will probably not be sold at a loss as with the GC. The backwards compatibility with GC and the virtual console are in Wii's favor, as is the prospect of multiplayer online Super Smash Bros. Brawl. SSB: Melee remains one of my favourite games.

They can campaign against sony all they like, band together, do whatever the hell they want, matter of fact is people who like the Playstation are still gonna get the PS3 no matter what Microsoft or Nintendo say. at the end of the day the PS2 sold more consoles than the Gamecube and Xbox put togther (100 million vs 40 million xboxs and 20 million gamecubes) and the developers recognise this and give sony their undivided attention, so the PS3 will end up with the most choice of games. Yes the Xbox 360 will have over 160 titles released by the time the ps3 comes out, but its not gonna make a great difference, sony will match that within 6-8 months. i imagine in a year or 2's time, the PS3 will have more titles than the Xbox 360.
