E3 06: Metal Gear Solid 4 Will Blow Your Mind

E3 06: Metal Gear Solid 4 Will Blow Your Mind

Guess who's back for Snake's latest and purportedly last mission? Try everybody who's ever been in the entire damn series.
By Brad Shoemaker, GameSpot Posted May 8, 2006 7:08 pm PT
LOS ANGELES--Naomi Hunter. Colonel Roy Campbell. Meryl Silverburgh. Raiden. Liquid...Ocelot? Those are the familiar faces unveiled during a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots at Sony's E3 press conference today. If you've been keeping up (and we know you have), you know that Solid Snake is one old fogy in his PlayStation 3 debut, unveiled at last year's Tokyo Game Show. Today, Sony dropped a short new trailer that really focused less on explosive action and more on the unveiling of these new characters, with Snake's pensive ruminations on the state of modern warfare providing the backdrop (which you heard in Hideo Kojima's audio blog last week).
But for longtime fans of Metal Gear, this short, understated trailer was a bigger punch to the gut than any number of giant, rampaging bipedal robots. The biggest shocker? Every character featured in the trailer has undergone some costume changes, but they're basically all the same age. Snake is the only one who's aged a significant amount, so there's definitely something fishy going on here. But then, with his dubious genetic history, who can honestly say what's up with Snake's rapidly advancing age? What we can say is, all these characters have done some, uh, maturing since we last saw them. Naomi's looking awfully haggard. Meryl's sauntering over, uttering "We're the new Foxhound" in a rather menacing fashion. "Liquid" Ocelot is sporting a fierce '70s style, with big rose-colored shades and a silver mullet. And Raiden... holy cow, Raiden's like the new cyborg ninja, wearing a crazy mechanized suit, flipping around in the midst of battle and speaking to Snake in gravelly new tones, "It's my turn to protect you." Our fanboy hearts are absolutely thudding in our chests.
Otherwise, you've got Snake lamenting the regimented, metered manner of war in the future. ID-tagged weapons keyed to ID-tagged soldiers, nanomachines enhancing the soldier's natural ability, "an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries and machines." Continuing: "Genetic control, information control, emotion control, battlefield control. The age of deterrence is now the age of control." Say what you want about Kojima's games, but he can write some punchy dialogue. And at the end, we see Snake sitting alone in a bombed-out shelter, gazing listlessly at his pistol before putting the piece in his mouth. "One more thing I must do. One last punishment I must endure."
"This is my final mission."
Chills. This is obviously the Metal Gear to end all Metal Gears, in more ways than one. We want to know more, desperately, but for now that's all we get. However, Konami's own E3 conference is scarcely 24 hours away, and if they just happen to drop anymore juicy tidbits about this game that a few of you may be interested in, we will certainly deliver them to you in a timely fashion.

HD Trailer can be found here
This is for those who don't want to sort the pages of the E3 thread just to talk about MGS4
Maybe Raiden will be a likeable badass character who you would WANT to play as this time

If anyone notices, Meryl Silverburgh appears to be a bad guy. I guess a remade Foxhound is now one of the PMCs in the game.

Picture of Meryl.

Pictures of the enemy: 1, 2.

BTW: In a previous thread I said I wanted a truely great trailer, and not just a tech demo. I'm more than happy now. I can't wait.

There's so many questions I have about this, so many ideas of how this magnum opus is going to play out. I guess time will tell.

BTW: If no-one else but me got this: there's gonna be a Metal Gear Solid game on the PSP as well set after Snake Eater that will show the foundation of Foxhound.

Yea, that PSP MGS sounds great.. way better than the Metal Gear Acid ****.

I haven't played a Metal Gear since MGS2 (3 was fun but I just didn't have the time for it, maybe I will soon), but I would play this from start to finish.

That is, if the money I spend on the PS3 allows me to even afford MGS4 with it

Meryl might actually be saying that snake, otacon, cambell, and herself are the new foxhound... I don't think she's a bad guy... bad girl, I mean!

At least that's the picture I got from the trailer....

She's pretty much wearing the same BDU as the "bad guys".

Time will tell though. 11am PDT to be precise.

i am really rooting for a sex scene between meryl and snake. i mean you kind of assumed that when they ran off after MGS1, but it was never explicit...

Sex scenes? snake and meryl kiss, jumps to next morning snake wakes up and watches as meryl puts her uniform on and lights up a cigar, and starts asking questions on how getting further... That's most likely it...

Well Meryl was notorious for enemy disguises in MGS, you never know.

As for the trailer, haven't had time to check it out but when I get back this afternoon, I will definately have to give it a look.

Alot of questions to be raised about this one though.

The BDU has the Foxhound logo on it. Some disguise that would be.

GameTrailers has been getting hammered the last few days because of people like us wanting to see all the E3 stuff. I haven't had any luck downloading any videos.

I got a few, but yeah. I can just imagine the sheer amount of traffic games sites have been getting in the last few days.

Guess I should pay more attention next time, but now I'm finally home and it's time to watch the trailer.

The irony is that people will WANT to play as Raiden now. Unless they have Quinton Flynn voice acting him again. >_<

Full 15 minutes of MGS godlyness(sp?)
By the way...i've read that PSP MGS(Back Ops or something) will cover a story gap between MGS 3 and first Metal Gear(for nes).

It will cover the foundation of Foxhound.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops is an upcoming stealth-based game being published by Konami and developed through Kojima Productions for the PlayStation Portable. During an interview with Famitsu magazine, Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima confirmed that this project was "a completely new Metal Gear Solid" for the PSP and will be part of the series' canon. It will not be a side-story like the previous Metal Gear Ac!d games, nor a remake. The game's release is expected to tie in with the 20th anniversary of the series.

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops has attracted the talents of several high ranking members from Kojima Productions including Shinta Nojiri as the project's director and producer, Shuyo Murata, and Kojima himself.

Session 56 of the HideChan! radio program revealed details about the game. It will be an interquel set between the events of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and the original Metal Gear, starring Big Boss during the early days of FOXHOUND. Gameplay will consist of squad-based action, in which the player takes control of several soldiers at once. The game will feature full cinemas and voice acting (actress Houko Kuwashima has confirmed that she will reprising her role of Para-Medic in the game). The game's graphics will be on par with those of the series' PlayStation 2 installments, but with a lower polygon count.

Interestingly enough, not only do Big Boss, Para-Medic, Sigint and Major Zero appear as playable characters, but in the teaser, Ocelot, EVA and Raikov appear as playable characters as well. Whether or not this is canonical with the game or if it's simply an easter egg remains unclear.
