if your talking about roms and iso's the sites are illegal, no matter what youvebeen told.

The only legal roms are public domain and those are few and cruddy kind of games if not homebrews anyways.

He asked for places to legally download games, I think he is aware that roms and isos are considered warez thus illegal

Didn't fileplanet have some sort of download service? Direct2drive is what comes up in my mind.

These games you have mentioned in your list is still licensed by the game studios.

Eventhough these games are very old, asking for a place to download these games is illegal.

Try abandonware, like Ghale0n said. But be advised, there's a whole FREAKING gray area around that legally.

As for your original post:

Companies like the one Cid mentioned are starting to spring up. The more that technology increases (as in: faster internet connections, etc) then the more you will see companies using online distribution systems. Why? Well look at it logistically. In a few years time when companies like EA are safe in the knowledge that over 80% of all gamers can access games at high speeds, then you will see game downloads/streaming systems becoming more available.

Until then, you've always got Steam.

AFAIK underdogs is legal place without much greyness. They share games they have permissions on or maker doesnt give a sht. And those games they do not have permissions they point where you can buy it.

Even if the maker doesn't give a **** you still do not have the right to distribute his copyrighted work freely. It's illegal until the developer has officially given permission. If this is the case with all their games, it's fine, but if it's not, it's not even a gray area, it's simply illegal.

But like you said MaZa, they also have games that link to shareware versions or demos.

It depends what you mean with grey area. For me Grey is where morals and sanity collides with laws and stupidites it might contain, both stepping on each others toes. Some are basically illegal in book when studied from § to §, but is it really sane to do that and what is the gain for both original developer and the one who wants to help future generations can get their hands on old dead classics? You are most likely quite aware of questions behind unlicensed fansubbed anime too but thats different subject...

I do not know if underdogs have direct permission from all developers, i havent asked, but piracy is definetly NOT something they are aiming at and therefore they have my moral support, partially.

Well I was just trying to explain it from an objective pov, but I think I don't need to explain that. From a realistic pov I share your opinion.

No worries, i understood what you meant. I just gave realistic pov to oppose your objective pov in case someone was interested.
