Something like Metroid Prime?

This is probably a pretty long shot, but I've been playing Metroid Prime for the past few days ... and I started wanting a game with similar gameplay and mechanics on the PC. You know what I mean? Like a game with the whole collection/scanning of items, or maybe some decent FPS set in a futuristic setting? I think I'm aware of almost every FPS game out there ... but I'm hoping that I missed one.

Maybe something like the original Deus Ex? Goddamn that game was sweet. Did anyone make something similar to that? Or does anyone have any recommendations for "futuristic" FPS games? Singleplayer of course. Something with a plot?

Thanks!

You could try Invisible War, but I think you'd be disappointed.

I was! *sob* Why did they ruin such an amazing opportunity? It still chokes me up when I think about that, and it makes me want to rant ... but I won't.

Any others you guys can think of? Maybe not an FPS? 3rd person maybe? Beyond Good & Evil (sweet game) kind of works for what I'm looking for, but I've already played that to death.

I played until I got to the streets. I can't explain it, but in the original Deus Ex, EVEN WHEN YOU KNEW that it was a small area, the open street areas never felt like they had a "roof" on them. The streets of Inivsible War felt linear, and it just put me off.

I feel quite bad for saying this. But I've never played that game. EVEN WORSE is the fact that I OWN it. >_>;

Yeah, I own that one too. It wasn't great, but I guess it wasn't too bad either. I hear ya on the repeating elements too. Drove me crazy. lol

I know exactly what you mean. Everything in DX:IW felt very crowded and limited to me as well. The freedom (apparent or otherwise) I felt in the original Deus Ex was completely gone. I've heard some people blame it on the engine and the restrictions it imposed on the level design (same argument for Thief: DS), but I don't buy it. They unnecessarily oversimplified everything when they decided to focus on the console market, and the games hurt because of it. I could go on and on about this ...

You should give it a try if you have the time. I've heard people compare it to LoZ: OoT or Wind Waker before, and I agree that they share some of the same qualities. It's a pretty fun game. Play it on the console if that's the version you have though - there are some nasty bugs in the PC version.

I'm sick of hearing the "they developed for the console market" excuse. In fact, I have SEVEN words that will completely neutralise the argument that they could not technically do something superior to Deus Ex/Thief even if they were developing primarily for the X-Box.

Those seven words are: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

It's a number-heavy, free-roaming RPG superfest that was designed for the X-Box first. Saying that developers have to constrict stuff like that when designing for consoles is the stupidest thing I've heard.

Then again, 14 year old X-Box fanboys wouldn't survive past the first guard encounter in the original Deus Ex. KotOR was a straightforwards RPG, those *******s seeing Invisible War as a FPS would probably expect a FPS

I've heard everything about the game. My ex almost broke my arm twisting it trying to get me to play it. I'll give it a try during the summer. And it's the PC version, but I've played a lot of buggy games in my time. It'll probably pale in comparison to a lot of them.

BTW: To get back onto the original topic, have you ever heard of Project: Snowblind?

But Ion Storm totally tried to pull that excuse when talking to the PC users! That's why I put in the unecessarily - they gutted the game because they genuinely thought that's what they needed to do for the console users. "Streamlined" was the marketing-speak I think. Simplified the UI, game mechanics, the whole deal. I'm sure I could probably find a quote to substantiate my claim, but the game sort of speaks for itself. It's so radically different from the original ... but maybe you understood what I was saying. If you did, now that I've re-read your response, ignore all of the crap above.

Personally, I hate the Star Wars franchise and the culture that surrounds it. But I really loved this game. BioWare makes such great games ... I couldn't help but like it.

It will, for sure. But there's this one bug that I remember quite vividly that's unavoidable and essentially ends the game for you. It's either present in the game if you patch it ... or if you don't. I can't remember which it is.

All I'm going to add to this is: THEY USED THE SAME AMMO FOR EVERY WEAPON!! WTF?!!

Case closed.

My sci-fi tastes go like this:

Babylon 5 > Star Trek > Star Wars (the new Battlestar Galactica will fit in between B5 and ST very soon though, it kicks ass)

I've never been "into" Star Wars as much as Star Trek. As in: I watched the movies, played the games. I don't buy into the whole pretentious culture of it in any way.

KotOR was simply put: totally awesome. I mean, any game that uses Jennifer Hale's voice is normally viewed initially with "this game is gonna be generic" overtones, but KotOR used her face as well. Automatic awesomeness.

One thing I've come to accept with PC games: s**t does and will happen.

I heard it was good. It's a psuedo-sequel to Deus Ex more focused on action.

well, i've just started playing System Shock 2 again, and one of the first things i thought was "damn, this is alot like metroid prime" alot of searching and backtracking, but with a few rpg and survival horror elements.

I got that ages ago. I think it had some issues with my PC. I've heard both awesome (you know, the game is a classic) things about it and some niggles about it (breakable guns?!).

yeah, I love the game, it so damn long and scary as hell. my old pc had issues with it too, which is why i'm playing it again, cause it doesn't run like ass anymore... the guns breaking is annoying at the beginning of the game, but you can repair them over and over, and once you get some of your maintainance and repair skills up to about 3 or so, you don't really need to worry bout it anymore. or, you can just go into the config file and turn it down a bit...

lol! I know! That's one of the first things that tipped me off to DX:IW not being as great as I was hoping it would be.

As for Project: Snowblind, I'll try and find a demo or something. Thanks for the suggestion.

One of my all-time favourite games. I love it. Played it far too much as well. hehe You're right though, some of the game mechanics in Prime are very similar to SS2 (in that order).

As for those who have complaints about SS2? Forget it. The game is a masterpiece and any failings are more than made up for by everything else that's present in the game. Looking Glass is God. I'm still waiting for SS3. lol

Does anyone else have any suggestions? I'm happy to keep talking about gamings sci-fi greats, but if there's a game on someone's mind that might fit the bill I'd love to hear about it.

I gave Project:Snowblind a try last night. I'd actually played the demo a while ago but forgotten about it. lol Needless to say, I was disappointed. There are some games that are just too heavy on the frantic action, and Snowblind was definitely one of them. Everything felt like it was in fast-forward. From my impressions of the demo, at least.
