Question is final fantasy withering out?

I was reading this:
http://rpgfan.com/news/2004/1959.html

and it got me thinking whether the superb series will slowly lose its quality after so many people have left Square Enix.
I was only aware of Nobuo Uematsu leaving, never knew about Mr Sakaguchi and his new company he wants to set up. I think FF12 will show us how much the series has changed in terms of quality, althought i hope it doesnt.
What do you think??

It's not just withering, it's dead. It was once one of the elite series, now it's keeping afloat by merit of appealing to people who demand little more than high quality graphics. It's still good as a visually appealing series, but innovation (and the need to innovate) has long been snuffed out of Final Fantasy.

if it does indeed die completely at least we still have the best of it. for ex. FF7, and FF10.

Ehemm... well while I personally consider FF4 to be the pinnacle of the series, FF6 the second best and FF7 the start of the the downfall, everything indeed has gone downhill since then. As Ryos mentioned, this apparent state of dying is nothing new... it's just that it has become obvious now since the corpse is starting to smell :/

To me the series began losing itself during ff9, althought ff10 was a breath of fresh air, FFX-2 ruined it in gameplay terms.

My two cents:

Until Final Fantasy X Square made solid RPGs that were fun to play (and I'm counting FFIX here, too!), brought good innovation and also had a nice long RPG-ish plot.

When the PS2 came out, they decided to concentrate way too much on stunning visuals and produced a game most people might have bought solely thanks to that (and the generic FF-hype, of course). While the innovation departement was already working on FFXI and XII, the headquarters decided that it took them way too long and so FFX-2 was born to satisfy the dumb masses who wanted another Yuna game soo bad.

Now, we have a similar situation: FFXII (hopefully the last of the series) is taking Aeons to be released, therefore the headquarters decided to throw not only one little something unto the dumb masses. No they gave them a whole bunch of spin-offs, remakes, whatever games for every imaginable platform - Yay!

In my opinion the Final Fantasy series deserves an honourable death. Nothing more and nothing less!

The GBA incarnarions of FFV and FFVI and the DS version of FFIII may be worth waiting for if they release them in English.

they went wrong after FF10. FF10-2 was wrong, FF11 was selling out to the mob and FF12 is conforming and broken (but i really should save my opinion on FF12 until actually playing it).

I think you guys are taking this all way too seriously. It’s just a videogame. Some sequels you like some you don’t it’s not that big of a deal. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it bad. It’s all just a choice. No one is forcing you play something you don’t like.

All final fantasy’s are meant to be different. Just like the people who make and play them. So give someone else a chance to try something different and stop being selfish.

i actually liked ff9 though yoru right is wasnt too original in terms of the battle/game system. Ya I also think after ff10 the series pretty much died flat out. ffx-2 wow was that a marketing plan gone horribly wrong.

Looks to me like you all think they were good up until FFX. SO, what you're really saying is they have made one BAD game "FFX-2" and one failed experiment in a totally new format "FFXI, MMORPG." I think it would be fair to forgive them for the MMO disaster, as they have no experience there (as far as I kow [?]), and given that, I don't think ONE bad out of TWELVE games constitutes the downfall of a series.

I bet there was this kind of discussion between every single FF release to date.

There's not only one game out of twelve, it is that amount of stupid spin-offs and remakes - why didn't they properly remake FFIV and V on PSX, in the first place?!? No, Square is right now raping the series just to make as much money as possible.

The only games of that bunch I might buy are FFXII and the DS remake of FFIII. There's no chance I'm going to buy any of those FFVII spin-offs!

the goal was never to remake final fantasy 4, 5 and 6. the upgrades to 1 and 2 were just incentives to get people to buy the WonderSwan versions eventually players asked to have these upgraded versions ported to the PlayStation. 3 was originally going to get graphical upgrades like 1 & 2 (16-bit visuals)

but the product has just taken so long they decided to put on the DS. Then they use upgraded graphics as an incentive again. simple business decision that's all.

as far as the FF7 spinoffs... that one with Vincent looks kind of neat. why be so quick to judge? give something a chance... or don't. maybe it's just not your style of game. but for people who are in that sort of thing I'm sure they'll enjoy it. (if it's done properly and the gameplay is fun)

Well, I have to admit that Dirge of Cerberus does look pretty cool, but, as we already pointed out, graphics are not everything.

Let's quit this for now, until the actual games are released.

I agree. I totally abhor the "Matrixification" (my term for expanding beyond what was required, needed or desired and ultimately worsened ) of Final Fantasy VII. Advent Children was awesome and merited, but the continued retcon of the game's series just smacks of milking the cash cow.

But anyways, Nobuo Uematsu left. Big deal. I think he stopped caring around Final Fantasy X when Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano did most of the work. I just hope Square-Enix hire Yoshiki Hayashi. Oh man, that would so RAWK!!

Lol, I'd make an oh-so ironic gesture that Final Fantasy XII might be "the final fantasy" but that's too corny.

The series have definitely decline in terms of quality in the last three games to the level of just a decent RPG.

FF10 was decent and entertaining, at least it keeps me interested until the end, FFX-2 just plain wrong tho

I'm not sure what to expect from 12 tho, the demo isn't that great.

No, no, no, no. I hope Shadow Hearts continue to be a relatively unknown but has a cult following kind of series

I don't want to lose the quirky humor and awesome main character just because the series went big and they decided to have a new whiny or perky or "I'm complicated" teenager as a main character, k thx
