Madou Monogatari.
Chrono Trigger was also nice, but a bit too easy.
FF5 gets brownie points for the interesting character developement system and for being insanely big.
FF6 was lame, story filled with cliches, and twisted out the FF5 system in the stupidest way I could think of. hate it.

I don't think I played any others.

FF6 got my vote. I like pretty much every game on that list though. My number 2 would probably be one that most haven't played, Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (FE4). I love the tactics and strategy of FE, and FE4 is very different from all the other Fire Emblem games - it even takes place over 2 separate generations, where the love pairings you create in part one affect the characters in part 2.

Chrono Trigger, although if I knew how few people gave Secret of Mana creds, I'd have voted for it instead...
I have a bunch of the RPGs, FF2/3,CT,SoM,LoZaLttP,SMRPG,IoG, but I've only finished SoM and CT...

Greetings,

I voted for Secret of Mana, as at the time it was one of the funnest games I had ever played. In fact, I beat it front to back the first time in one sitting (30+) hours. I still remember my mom freaking out when she realized I had been up doing nothing but playing the same game for days.

It is my personal opinion that FF2 (4j) was one of the greatest and most underated FF games ever. Although 1,2, and 3 on the NES were fun, 4 on the SNES really went on to set the tone for all later Final Fantasies to come. It was chock full of memorable characters, a great battle system*, and a decent enough plot to compel you through the game.

*One thing I really loved about the battles is the fact that your party can have up to 5 characters, and at some junctures all their abilities are needed. I also liked the fixed class/abilities system, because it made each character unique and important. Not to say I didn't enjoy FF5, because I very much did, but there is some mild disparity in going from Knight to Thief without a second thought. I think having characters whose abilities are based on thier personalities and thier own self, who rise up beyond what normal people are capable of in the face of great evil is just a concept that can really get me involved in a game, as opposed to being bestowed the power by an outside source. (Which can be divided even further into two outside sources, one which is only accessible by the heroes, and one which is available to everyone. For instance, the classes of FF5 were only available to the Four descendants, but in FF7 Materia was everywhere and used by everyone. Obviously based soley on this I would choose the former over the latter.) Oh, but this digression goes past my original point which is that I am unbelievably bored of 3-person parties, and I'm sure the only reason for this trend is that this allows more polygons to be applied per character.

Sincerely,
TastEPlasma

EDIT PS: Oh, and although FF7 is often credited with opening RPGs to a larger more mainstream audience, I think in actuality Chrono Trigger set the stage for that to happen. And the first RPG I ever played was Dragon Warrior on a black and white 13" TV set at a relatives house.

Still FF9 characters seem to have more poly's per character than FF7 and 8. Plust there are 4 characters. And FF7's character models didn't have that many poly's, except for Tifa's bOObs

Yeah, I think the 3-character party is more about a specific gameplay choice than about polygons. I think part of it has to do with flexibility and "moldibility" of characters... in alot of the games where there are only 3 characters, you have the option to significantly alter character stats and "classes"... having more flexible and multi-skilled characters makes having more characters less necessary. For example, in FF7, 8, and 10 there are very customizable systems (materia, junctioning, sphere grid) that lets you make a character more-or-less any "class" you want, so they limit it to 3 characters, whereas in FF9, 4, 6 (to a degree), the classes are more defined, hence there are more than 3 characters.

Hmm, I had forgotten about how FF9 had a 4 character system. You both make really good points, I rescind my earlier statement and accept your views.

There is a fan made 100% japanese to english patch available at http://www.dejap.com/ , they have done a lot of really great games (Star Ocean, DQ for SNES games, etc.) however I think they are dead now. The webpage hasn't been updated in a year and a half, anyways.

Sincerely,
TastEPlasma

i liked just about all the generic "oooh and ahhh" ones. i don't remember enough about them to say so-and-so is the best one. it'd probably be one of the square ones.

I have to say Seiken Densetsu 3 was my favourite... but the god bosses take so LONG to kill (took me 3 months on/off to kill the ice one O.o).

It's actually considered a Simulation or even a Strategy game with Simulation tendencies. This would be on the case with the Sims.

I'm amazed more people havn't mention or been fans of the Breath of Fire series of games for the SNES. I found II to be quite a enjoyable experience.
