Angry Yet Another Game Ruined by Subpar Voiceacting: Star Ocean 3 Till End of Time

The topic of voiceacting for Japanese games/animes has been discussed before. And here is just yet another would-be-great title that is going to be brought down by the "low-budget approach" with voice talent (actually I don't care how much they spend, I want the original one included!).
Quote from IGN:
Quote:
In fact, the voice acting inevitably kills the mood during some of the most powerful scenes. With amateurish deliveries, bad timing, and multiple characters that seem to share the same actor. And given the Japanese version's incredibly high-profile cast (talent from Bubblegum Crisis, Scryed, Vandread, and Love Hina provided their duties overseas), the choice to go low budget in this regard was a poor one.

I suppose I really should go study Japanese now..

From all the sales of Star Ocean 2 in Europe and North America they should have known that they would get there money's worth for Star Ocean 3 ... So why not spend a few more dollars for better voice actors That sucks.

Actually...SO 3's voice acting isn't that bad. It's kind of annoying some guy has 12 characters he does in the main plot, but oh well.

Yeah, I just watched some videos and the voice acting isn't the worst I've seen. It could use improvement though. The real problem seems to lie in the timing. Each character pauses for ~5 seconds before they reply to what another character has said.

I truly think the voice acting is very above average. Trust me, it could be ALOT worse. And I really think people need to stop taking things for granted....I mean really, when I first started playing video games about 15 years or so ago, I was playing Super Mario Bros. Technology is advancing at a very fast pace, and people think that all this stuff should just be done perfect. I have already put 15 hours into Star Ocean:Till the End Of Time and think it is going to one of the BEST rpg's I've ever played. The only really annoying thing about it is the amount of leveling up that this game requires. Almost everytime I get to a new area, I have to spend at least an hour gaining levels. But I think that might be a good thing, because it spaces the extensive storyline out a little. Next time try playing a game yourself instead of just taking some websites word for it.

Yeah, I should really see it for myself before the complaints. The things is though, I've played several Japanese RGPs and I never really like the voiceacting of them, even for a high-budget (right?) one like Final Fantasy X. Same goes for animes. As far as taking things for granted...well, we are paying for them though . I don't wish for them to spend a lot of money on more/better voice talents, letting us have the option or opportunity to have the original sounds is well enough.

This is a better job of voiceacting than that overacting melodrama known as FFX. As a sub elitist, saying that a dub is ok is like me saying...uh...that I'm going to start playing racing games. I think I'd say the dubbing overall for SO 3 is better than any other game that I've played other than Kingdom Hearts. So...yeah. Just make sure you don't use the annoying characters, and you should be ok.

I think the problem with SO3 is the script... I think Square writes kinda cheesy scripts. Don't get me wrong, they write good PLOTS, but their scripting for DIALOGUE needs alot of improvement. I had a chance to play both the English and the Japanese versions of FFX, and while people complained about the English voice acting, I found the Japanese version equally disappointing.

There's roughly 20-30 hours of voice acting scenes. If you couldn't turn off voices (which you can in SO 3), bad voice acting really would kill the story.

True enough, after enough battling you will find those voices will get on your nerves. So yes that option is quite handy

On the other note after SO3 I will be off to Phantom Braves which has the Japanese dialogues, so I will be entreated after this game hehe

Wel, at least the developer of SO3 knows their voice acting are cramp. So they put the turn off voice feature.

The only English voice acting I've ever heard for a videogame that I thought was really good was Grandia 2.
