D&D Online is a MMORPG, unlike NWN which is player run servers. quite different. and of course there's the monthly fee difference. i haven't looking into it due to that reason. otherwise, i'd be looking forward to it.

as for AD&D vs. D&D i think i heard something about how they weren't calling it advanced anymore and just went back to calling it straight D&D.

D&D Online .. under development by Turbine Entertainment to be released in 2005 ... too bad they don't have anything useful on their site yet .. no screenies or even concept art

They also made both Asheron's Call games and are also developing Middle-Earth MMORPG so at least they're experienced, I guess we can expect good things to come from this one. Although some people might argue that nothing good comes out of D&D. :P

I dunno... I'm actually not all that enthused about the D&D online project for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that I'm just not a big fan of subscription gaming. I don't think any game should require monthly payments. There's also the fact that while a living breathing 24/7 gaming world is cool and loaded with alot possibility, in actuality it has alot of problems. Mainly that it rewards the "power gamers" which kinda screws up the experience of the average gamers. I mean when someone is playing a game hour after hour, every single day, these people quickly become the most powerful and get the best items, which leads to a division between players. Also, people are more prone to being immature ****s in online gaming in general, and in an RPG where stats (not just pure skill, like in an FPS) dictate battles, there can be lots of bullying and stupid **** going on, which can be even more annoying or overwhelming to a more "common" gamer.

The main other reason I don't think MMO really benefits the D&D world is that the essence of pen & paper D&D, while very wide open, is all about playing in small close-knit groups. The concept of D&D is "massive" not because of the actual amount of players, but because of the unlimited imagination of the DM and the players. I suppose they could try to foster party formation in the world, and indeed in online gaming, parties, guilds, etc. form to bolster "power", but it's not the same as a bunch of real-life buddies sitting around eating doritos, laughing, and having a fun D&D experience.

aye, have to agree with rhombus on this one. d&d is better played where humans are DMs, not a bunch of scripts. at this point, they're just trying to make money off D&D, which has a very complex system of character development. i mean, it'll still work as fine as any other mmorpg out there, but it wont have the same feeling. it WILL just be another mmorpg. i'd be much rather looking forward to NWN2.

i don't think theres anything official about nwn2, but atari still owns the rights to it. dragon age will be bioware's primary game now, so it wouldn't surprise me if nwn2 is done by another company or if bioware does make it, it'd be after dragon age is done.

I'd be a lot more interested if the site had any sort of data whatsoever on the game and its transition to an MMO. There's a potential for two possibilities: either it will be a great interpretation of the classic pen and paper style or it will be an absolute failure trying to exploit the name. As it stands right now, it's impossible to gauge whether it will be the former or the latter.

from what i've read with their interviews, the goal is definetly to make it feel like pen & paper. but again, thats just the goal. they make it sound as though they're going to try and make it a tighter-knit community where people will see each other more often. i guess that would translate to many small servers. the game is being shipped with level 20 cap, which translates to many, many expansions. i guess we'll just have to wait a few months until solid info shows up. haven't read anything about a monthly fee yet, but i'll assume there is one until told otherwise.
