Lightbulb Wing Commander

Guys, i need your advice. I'm looking for something similar to Wing Commander prophecy for the pc. Anyone know of a game that has a similar feel to it?

...you can try some older titles of the Wing Commander universe. WC3 & WC4 are also FMV-heavy action packed space-combat games. (the first 2, although great games, are considered "obsolete" from a technical viewpoint by todays standards, so you can skip them).

You can also try Descent:Freespace, and Freespace 2 and, why not, Starlancer.... and of course, there is always I-War & its sequel.

If you don't mind playing something with less FMV, but great story none the less, you can also try some games of the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series (X-Wing Alliance being the last, and most impressive technically).

Also, if you don't mind mixing it up with a little space trading, you can even go for Freelancer, or Privateer 2. (Don't try the original Privateer if you don't like old DOS games). If you come to really like the space-trading kind, give X-Beyond the Frontier & X-2 a try...

There are many more relatively unknown games of this kind (Renegade, X-COM Interceptor, Forced Alliance etc) but I've already listed the really good ones....

they are updated ussually about games that have similar taste, both new and up and comming games. As well as numerous mods that have WC style.

I have finished them both ,Man I love Wing Commander. That game had the feeling of absolute freedom and a nice storyline to boot. as for the older ones - i tried to play Wing Commander Academy, but it was too old for my taste (I don't really mind dos-based games), but that one is ancient.

Do you also get to play with Wingmen in these mentioned games?

Yeah. Afaik, the best game of it's kind to fit WC's description (arcade-like) would be Freespace 2, although the Freespace series don't work on story as much as WC does. It still is the best game of it's kind I have come accross though. As an addition to the games sights already mentioned, I believe there's also a previously popular game called Tachyon, although I never played it myself. Darklight Conflict and the "newest" (=old already) edition of Sinistar(sp?) are games of similar gameplay, but aren't nearly as good imo.

Yes - almost in every mission . However some of these games offer less opportunity for wingmen/escorts (epecially some of the "trading" kind, like Freelancer and X-BotF, IIRC).

...yep, those are definately very nice games - especially Tachyon: The Fringe. The other two are a bit more action-oriented "space shooters", than full-fledged "space combat sims", but yeah, they were definately worth mentioning.

I've been enjoying those games since the first Wing Commander to Secret Ops, after which I accidently got Freespace in my hands, which then led me to Freespace 2 of which I FINALLY found a DVD version in the stores, which still has me hooked to this day, and I have played none of those games with a joystick

I've always enjoyed it enough with just a mouse & keyboard, even if some of my more fanatic gaming friends keep pushing me to buy a joystick for it.

What i really liked the most about WC Prophecy is that you get to play with alot of wingmen at a time. They had really cool comments and taunts too.

I bought a real piece of junc called Xenogracy, after that dissapointment, i kinda gave up and feverently hoped for a new WC release.

Developers: http://www.volition-inc.com/

Edit: |3illy|3ob, it's box says 1999 for a reason.

you never heard of freespace 2 before!?!? Jeez, even when i didn't know a damn thing about those types of games, i knew what freespace 2 was. It's been hailed as the absolute best of its kind. It was made in 2000, not too long ago, and is sequal to Descent: Freespace.

And it still has decent graphics for todays game if you are concern about that permethium, at least way better than prophecy

Too bad volition turn its course from "space sim" and instead made the summoner series.....

Freespace 2 is actually being rereleased.. in a special edition. I can't seem to find out what's all in it though.

and now don't go be knocking on volition for the summoner series. I actually liked it. It was quite different and had a different flavor than most console Rpg's. Theyre also creators of the Red Faction series and the up and coming Punisher game.

It was rereleased once already as a fully patched + all downloadable extra's from the website included DVD version.

I see. http://www.wcnews.com/news/showupdate.php?id=5257

I wonder though, that newsbit is from 2/1/2004. And everyone who is horny for Fallout 3 knows that much crap has happened to Interplay lately. So I wonder how much of this has held true.

What I found more interesting however was..
Quote:
On top of that, the source code was released and distribution of the game was made legal.
wtf? :O

Edit: Interesting: http://www.wcnews.com/news/showupdate.php?id=5616

wtf x2 :O
