HL2, not summer of 2004?

So, after reading the hotmail topic, i decided to randomly check my hotmail account. Just days after the announcement of sierra's demise, i get an email from gamestop.

Quote:
Dear Customer,

You have signed up to receive release date changes for:

Half-Life 2

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=645118&affid=1

Old Release Date - 9/1/2004
New Release Date - 11/1/2004

Thank you for visiting GameStop.com!

NOTE: The product release date is the best estimate as to when the product
will become available. These dates are subject to change at anytime.
GameStop.com is in constant communication with product vendors to provide you with the most accurate release dates possible.
So, what do you think? Do you think the sierra news could have delayed it this much? I've always hoped that HL2 could at least make it within a year of its original release... but things are looking grim. This game WILL turn into DNF if things keep up.

Bah, there's been no official date for HL2 beside September last year, so I wouldn't trust this, we'll just have to wait and see, no use discussing this, the game is almost done, it'll come out this year, obviously.

i don't know, ask 3drealms that question. Because Duke Nukem Forever has been delayed for well over 5 years. It was so close to being done then, why wasn't it released yet?

Sure it sucks having to wait for it, but I'd rather they delay it and make sure everything's in good order rather than releasing a perhaps buggy, less-than-perfect game. They'll release it when they're sure it's good'n ready.

I dont think it will end up like DNF.

1. Valve isnt in any immediate financial problems
2. They already started showing off CS:S in korea (People actually played it)
3. They need it to stay alive, they just cant keep floating on steam.

It will be released, just when is the question.

k, to make it clear, the game IS completed, they're in the beta testing phase, which means they won't add anything, they won't remake anything, they'll just fix bugs that are too important not to be fixed before release, the game will be out in the coming months, so stop comparing it to DNF, it has nothing in common with DNF. Such threads each time a new release date pops up on your random online shop are really starting to bug me, at this rate we'll have to add "Do not speculate on Half Life 2's release date" as a rule...

Duke Nukem Forever was never delayed. It's just taking forever.

But Raziel is right, comparing any game to DNF is just not right. DNF is like a carrot hung in front of a horse to get it to move. But DNF is a game I have been waiting for since it was first announced and I will continue waiting for it patiently because I trust 3DRealms to make a good game. And Reichfurher, why do you think 3DRealms has immediate financial problems? That company is loaded.

no? It wasn't delayed?

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/du...s_2460867.html
"Duke is expected to return to the PC sometime towards the end of 2000."

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/du...s_2661552.html
" it is currently scheduled for release in the second half of 2001"

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/du...s_2761750.html
" the game's release date is finally in sight"

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/du...s_2863810.html
"While the game is officially scheduled for release 'when it's done,' online retailers are estimating that the game will be released sometime in October."

I'd like to note that this is the first time that they ever said it's done when it's done, and that before this the developers themselves have stated release dates. Also, you can't see it since gamespot's news coverage begins in 99, but in 98's E3, they were talking about a end of 98 to mid 99 release date. I admit it was rude to compare HL2 to DNF, but just at least see that DNF is indeed a delay whore.

Well none of those release dates were official 3DRealms release dates. George Broussard has emphatically denied those. But enough of semantics, we can all agree that DNF is taking way too long.

But back to HL2, has Valve said anything about release dates or are those speculations by game stores?

unless their contract states otherwise, that isn't really true. They could release it whenever they're done, even if it is before HL2. What i never got was how are they developing with an incomplete engine? They must have liscensed an early one, and just heavily modified it from there.
