Star Ocean 2: Control One Character Only?

I have started playing Star Ocean 2 and I found that I can only control the main character. The rest of the characters are AI controlled.

Is there a way to manually control the other characters?

the AI usually works pretty well, and you can bark out orders to them using the menu. I think depending on party arrangement, you can choose who you control in battles, although i dont remember if you can switch who you control mid-battle.
