Silent Hill 2 Refuses to Run

Ok, so I recently bought SH2 for PC. Went to install it tonight. When I attempt to run it, the game just hangs at a black screen. No text or graphics show up on the monitor, just the black screen. I've tried deleting and re-installing the game three times, and I've applied both of the patches offered on the Konami website. I even tried copying the text from a valid settings file over my settings file, no luck there. I turned off all of my non-critical background processes, no luck there either.

System:

2.53 ghz with WinXP
512 mb RAM, 120gb HD
GeForce 4 TI4600 Ultra
DirectX 9.0b

There is absolutely no reason why this game shouldn't be running(unless it hates DX9)

I'm running the 45.23 detonators(I rolled back for another application several months ago) with my desktop at 1280x960x32. I'm going to try upgrading to the newest video drivers, and see if that helps.

If you guys know of any way to fix this, I'll be so very happy...

you must choose "enable fog" or something called like that in your geforce4 properties to run the game (dont remember anymore how exactly it was called). if its already on and the game still wount run, try it on another operating system on another partition. should work. and yeah, trying the newest forceware driver wount hurt anyway.

ps: great game, super story, awesome soundtrack . good luck

Yeah, it was already on. I did a 4th installation, upgraded the video drivers, tried the two patches again, still nothing. I don't have another OS or partition to try it on. I have other machines with other OSes on them, but all too old. This is frustrating as hell. I have a super-common configuration and this game randomly refuses to work. WTF?

While i play that game i have 4 ti 4200 and using 30.82 to play it W/O any problem (i don't even install any patch but it run flawless , finish it 5 times to get every ending )

Have you o/c your cpu ? , it may sounds dumb but did you try lower your cpu clock to Stock?

If you like SH2 , you Must play SH1 (on ePSXe if you don't own PsX ) , SH3 is also good it creepier/scarier than SH2 , SH1 But has lower replay value (only 2 difference ending while SH2 has 5 , SH1 has 3 )

Yeah, everything runs at stock speed, no overclocking. I have SH1 for PSX, got about 80% of the way through it several years ago and then got sidetracked by other things.

OK, so I exchanged my copy of SH2 for another one, reinstalled, no luck. Nobody on like 5 message boards has had any idea what the problem is, Konami's tech support won't write or call me back. I found a guy on Konami's message boards that's having the same problem, he hasn't found a solution either. It has to be a piece of software I have on here somehow. Although powerful, I have a very very common hardware setup on here. Konami's tech support is garbage. When you call them, instead of being put on hold for a live rep you get a freaking answering machine. You just *know* that's a black hole, I left a message earlier today and of course was not called back...

Muahahahahahahaha! Success! I got a tech support guy to call me back, and after we threw back and forth some solutions, he suggested I unplug all of my USB devices and try to run the game. I had done this before, but I had unplugged everything *except* the KikY usb-ps2 adapter I had purchased for this game. That fixed it, it was the adapter that was causing problems. After figuring this out, I went to www.soyo.com to see if there was anything about new drivers for the adapter or something.

Astonishingly@! There were! In broken English they describe exactly the problem I was having and offer beta drivers as a fix, which they did.

1. this driver is designed for users who after installing the device, during start of the game are experiencing blank screen on the monitor.

The driver is available here, should any of you have this problem in the future.
