Hiroshi Yamauchi

Quote:
Nihon Keizai Shimbun has posted an interview with the former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, he expressed that Nintendo's fate would be decided in the next two years. If Nintendo DS should become a success, the company will be in the sky; if it is a flop, the company will sink into the hell. He further mentioned that the Nintendo DS was his last proposal to the company, he does not plan to interfere the plans in Nintendo, since he is no longer managing the company.
I didn't realize it would make such a difference.

Quote:
Hiroshi Yamauchi commented on the GameCube successor system, he said the system will be demonstrated in E3 2005. He also said the people who use the term "Next Generation" are persons who have no knowledge with games. The reason is that players do not always want better graphics and sound, an upgraded system does not automatically offer better games, better technology does not automatically offer more interesting games.
The "next generation" is just the next batch of consoles that hit the market at about the same time.
Either this was a bad translation or this is another example of how Nintendo thinks which is that they solely define the gaming experience.

Most players want better/more realistic graphics. We are on the road to realism and there is no turning back. Eventually people will get bored with realism but that is far off. Also the typical gamer doesn't want to buy a new console for games that look as if he could play them on his current console(s).

Hmmm... you have a point. You see this is the way Yamauchi has always thought (like this). And that also explains a lot of Nintendo decisions in the past. Not to mention all the big decisions Shigeru Miyamoto has made (and we all know how he thinks )

i agree about the better graphics not making a better game thing, (how many people still say the snes is their favourite system) imho he means that a new console can not rely only on improved graphics.

I agree graphics is not everything
It is more on the controls and gameplay that matter
if you ask me

I think everyone know's graphics are not everything (xbox) and that the games are what's important (PS2, GCN).

I cant really see why the DS would be the "make or break" for Nintendo, Nokia launched with the N-Gage and we all know that was a failure and they arnt dead. In fact they announced something new for E3.

Anyway's I will buy the DS and support my Nintendo

To me, gameplay comes first, next is controls, next is story, next is sound.

If you ask me, the only serious hardware that can impede how fun a game is how much the RAM is in the system, and how much the medium (CD, Catridge) can hold. But I bet developers can work around that.

why is it so big deal to look real.... there are great games that don't have 'great' graphiqs but are still popular. for example ff7... of course it's great to have good graphiqs but it's not the reason I buy or why I will not buy a game...

Same here graphics dont matter so much as gameplay and controls. I really enjoyed playing only 2d games on handhelds. But every person that thinks gameplay is important there are another ten that think graphics count the most.

I can relate this to the Video card wars... Nvidia never thought longterm always packing up their chipsets with big things where in ATI inovated. Now that grunt is reaching its limmits and how the grunt is implemented is taking over ATI have begun to win the competition. So when games are purely real Nintendo should make a big hit... If they last that long.

By the way I dont believe you people prefer gameplay over graphics

in the end, gran turismo could have all the realism it wants, but mario kart gets my money. (which in my opinion, grant turismo makes up for lack of gameplay with "realism") play one gran turismo, you practically played it all. (same could be said about megaman)

screw realism, i want a game that could keep me entertained. (trying to do 500 laps like in gt is a snooze fest). this is prolly why nintendo is the best in making games imo, their games are always fun.

probably this is why i am leaning towards emulation more (classics are way funner in the pc)

I love realism... as long as it is fun. That's why I like Call of Duty.

Of course a new system leads to new graphics and stuff, but what is it that you want?? I'm playing Skies Of Arcadia on my DC now, and in one way it's realistic, on the other hand, it's like a cartoon. But fact is, I love the graphics because a RPG doesn't have to be very realistic, fantasy style has got even more to offer than realism IMO.

But of course there are games where you do want realism, like sim-racers (gran turismo) and shooters.

So I think it's definately not the console that kills itself or other consoles, it's the game line up.
