You mean like Ikaruga, arguably one of the finest virtical scrolling shoot-em-ips ever released?

I recommend this one (Flash needed): http://people.cornell.edu/pages/bpr7/fight4.swf

Also, look for Tyrian/Tyrian 2000.

Pop 'N Twinbee (SNES)

I particularly enjoy the random noises when you collect a power-up in this game. Plus it's got Manga (albeit brief) in for all you Manga fans!

exactly. and i DO prefer vertical to horizontal. For some reason, i tend to suck a hell of a lot more at horizontal ones than at vertical ones, despite vertical shooters being more difficult in general. I suppose vertical ones have you rely more on bullet dodging which i'm fairly good at.

Oh, and thanks for the suggestions guys, keep em coming

Hi all. Well I am not exactally a guy but here are two of my favorites. Doom any version and Wolfenstien 3D. Also if you like realistic, true to life shooting games, then you might like Call of Duty.

personal favourite: ZanacXZanac (PSOne)

funny detail: Tyrian has a few 'nods' towards the original Zanac (NES/MSX). Zanac and Tyrian could be considered far family

btw, the guys that made the Zanac games (compile) also made the Aleste and Powerstrike games; many of these games share a similarity in the weapons system; there are powerups with numbers, each corresponding with a weapon; usually weapon 0 - 8, often with limited ammo. Tyrian borrows from this somewhat, but has a system of its own though.

straight from my WF.ini version 1.02:

1=22870200 25 17

So i made a score of 22.870.200 at level 25 with 17 dies... but that's because i know of the way to make the growth of the ship REALLY weak(and i know to make it pretty strong too, that makes fights more interesting)

If you want, i'll post some replays here, everybody who saw me in action says the things i do are not humanly possible(okay... i DO play that game the most, couple of hours everyday)

Zanac (NES) version was the first vertical shooter that got me into loving that genre so much. Heres what I suggest for vertical shooter lovers :

Zanac (NES) : Only here because ive spent so much hours playing that game on my old NES system

Aerofighters (SNES) : This is definitly a must get game. You get two choose between 4 fighters and there is a 2 player mode

Ikaruga : (DreamCast, GameCube) : I have this one on Gamecube and let me tell you, the black/white thing is really nice! Its also one of the hardest vertical shooters ive played (on consoles). The Easy mode is very hard. Only 5 levels but just getting to the 4th is a huge challenge

Ok I consider myself an insane fan of shooter games.....but I haven't played most of the games mentioned. But from what I have played I will say that you must play the 1942,43,xx series and definitly Giga Wing 1 and 2. Neither of these games have a huge weapon upgrade system though which is a little dissapointing. However I just played Einhander (yep the one by Square) and it is without a doubt one of the most amazing shooters I have ever played. When it comes to shooters that just leave you breathless GigaWing2 and Einhander are those types. You have to play them both to understand why. Just get Einhander!!! I think I'll be posting in this thread again Going to try Ikaruga out as soon as I get it....which should be soon.

I personally reccommend Raptor: Call of the Shadows, Stargunner, and Tyrian. All DOS games.

Ikaruga truly excellent, I got it a while back for the GC. I'm still trying to break 60 chains on stage 1.

My suggestions:

- Ikaruga (DC and GC)
- R-Type series (1 and 2 on MAME, 3 on SNES, Delta on PSX)
- Einhander (PSX)
- Gigawing (MAME)
- Sonic Wings/Aerofighters series (MAME)
- DonPachi and DoDonPachi (MAME)
- 194x series (MAME)
- Parodius series (MAME and SNES)

I'm surprised that so far no one mentioned Border Down for the DC, bloody great shooter... also I'd be on the lookout for "Castle of the Shikigami 2", an upcoming shooter to be released on the DC and the PS2 (though the DC port is supposed to be better since it's based on a naomi board)...

Then if you are into classics, you can't skip Gradius 3 on the Snes...

My favourites in the arcade (classic 80's > early 90's) are Truxton (amazing soundtrack, great power ups and you have to be skilled to take advantage of the top power ups), Salamander (another with good digitised speech effects and great power ups), Jackal (you play as a jeep and get rocket power ups by busting prisoners of war out of prisons), 1943 Kai (very good power ups and its lots of fun destroying huge battleships), Flying Shark (basic but fun, dodge and pick up power ups), Galaga 88 (Top soundtrack and you can pick different routes through the game plus the galactic dancing stages are so funny), Gemini Wing (more basic up scrolling shooter with a twist as enemies are insects), ahh that will do for the moment as theres loads more I like..

Many goodies listed..classic wise we would also add GAIARES (sp?) for Genesis, Konami's Salamander series, Legendary wings for NES, Radiant Silvergun (good luck getting that) for Saturn

oh and good news...by now R-Type Final for PS2 should be released
