FF7, a problem unheard of
Hi everybody, I'm having a huge problem with getting FF7 up and running as it should. I've looked through other peoples' questions, and mine hasn't come up yet. I've managed to install and start a new game, I get all the way to the part where I'm supposed to enter my own name, when the keyboard screws itself up totally. Instead of being able to move the cursor(hand) with my directional keys, all keys seem to have been disabled except for valid letter keys, which only produce their respectable letters. Thus, I end up stuck in the name screen and can't get out no matter what I press! I tried changing keys to everything, tried pressing them in different combos, but nothing seems to help. I'm using a laptop (Compaq Evo N1020v), so I've downloaded and installed the laptop patch available, the XP patch and everything I've found. I'm still blank. I also tried changing the config-file with a friend of mine's, who's game is working perfectly. Does anyone have a clue why my keyboard suddenly switches modes and doesn't obey me anymore? Please help, I'm desperate! Slize... |

I have no clue what your talking about. IIRC, Both FF7 for PC and PSX use a D-pad and "X" button to select letters. even on the PC version, you cant type a letter and expect it to come out.

Because you are using a laptop you need don't have a separate keypad like on pc's, so you'll have to use a patch for it. I use it on my laptop. It's the second one from the top - titled FF7 Input Patch. It's a very small file. http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/su...h.html?gmid=44 Enjoy! ![]() Edit: Whoops! I didn't see the bit where you had already installed this. My mistake. This tells you what keys to use when using a laptop: http://www.eidosinteractive.co.uk/su...qid=70&gmid=44 |

thanks, but it didn't help
As I tried to explain, I'm on a laptop, and I already installed the laptop input patch. The problem here is that my keyboard doesn't react like on other PCs when I get to the "enter name" screen. What happens is that instead of being able to move the cursor (hand) around, I'm only able to type the name by literally typing it with letters on the keyboard, and all the set buttons don't work! EEIK!

In that case this isn't emulation discussion. Moving to game discussion. Regarding your problem: Do you have a desktop machine you could use to set the keys up then transfer the config file to your laptop? Maybe try using a gamepad?

I remember having the same problem also some weeks ago. IIRC you should use the default keys from the game to select and confirm the whole stuff. I hope it works. Cause I've only met this problem once. Gravis GamepadPro user

The only other thing that I can think of (aside from what everyone else has suggested.....and yes, I do own FF7 PC) is to copy your save file(s) to another computer, and work with them there to get past the naming screen.....or you could just plug a USB (or other type of) keyboard into your laptop and try that..... If that doesn't work for you.....sorry, I tried.
