Re: Cyber punk games??

Blade Runner was supposed to be good.

Also there was some kind of 3/4 overhead game... I believe it was called Syndicate. I remember installing it on a recommendation but I didn't like it much. A lot of other people did tho. So I heard way back when.

I have Hell here. Never got to play it actually. Might try it now, using Vpc and Win95

Re: Cyber punk games??

You could try the Fallout games. They're not really cyberpunk - but they do have much of the cyberpunk atmosphere in a kind of post-apocalyptical setting.

But cyberpunk is a genre that has been greatly overlooked in games. It's far easier to find cyberpunk literature

Katsuya makes herself seem knowledgable by talking down to cloud but never gives an answer to his question.
Conclusion: Katsuya doesn't know what cyber punk is either.

Re: Cyber punk games??

Well, actually I was wondering about it too. I don't know what cyberpunk is, but I didn't want to ask here after the treatment cloud received.

Thx Taisen. But with all those descriptions I'm still not sure what it is. Is there anything really popular and considered cyberpunk?

Re: Cyber punk games??

Bloodnet, by MicroProse is a quite nice CyberPunk game (although I'd say it's more Cyber-Goth, but that's just my own, very personal opinion...)

Fallout 1&2 are recommendable, eventough (as stated) NOT CyberPunk, yet post-apocalyptic... And they do ROCK!

Note:

For those wondering what CyberPunk is, there is a faq (Frequently Asked Questions) on the net, at this adress:

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/cyberpunk-faq/

And if you are really interested, I sincerely recommend reading William Gibson, starting with Neuromancer, working through the trilogy consisting of; Mona Lisa Overdrive and finally Count Zero. (These are merely a few of the books he has written, but are a good start to get into the CyberPunk community, since he started it.)

To my knowledge (I emphasize, to my) the best example is Snatcher for the Sega CD... other than that I'd go for Blade Runner on the PC (developed by WestWood)...

Re: Cyber punk games??

Woohoo! I didn't realize Neuromancer was the official *origin* of cyber-punk. I *love* that whole series.

Cyber-punk refers to a flavor of Sci-Fi that has a dark, opressive atmosphere. Cyber-punk stories, as one might infer from the "cyber" part, always deal with super-advanced computers of some kind. Often people in cyber-punk stories will have some kind of electronics planted in them as well. Mostly, the cyber-punk genre deals with futuristic timelines like any other sci-fi, but what makes them Cyber-Punk is the general atmosphere, or *feel*, of the story. Gangs run rampant. The government usually exerts way too much control over the populous, and much of the story will deal with the "shady" side of society. The later is probably, unfortunately, one of the big reasons that this awesome genre is so often absent from video game shelves. "Hell" is the only video game I've played in this genre that comes to mind, and it was obviously *not* a high-budget production, although I remember the voice acting to be passable.

Anyone here who hasn't read William Gibson, go read Neuromancer & then you too will understand

I love the movie Blade Runner (in fact, it's one of my all-time favorites), but I didn't even knew that there was a PC game based on it. Do you know if it's any good?

You can find lots of cyberpunk examples in books and pen&paper RPGs. The cyberpunk theme was greatly overlooked in videogames, though - like I said before.

You should really give Willian Gibson's "Neuromancer" a try. It's a very good book, and the first example of origin of the cyberpunk genre. Although you can find the roots of the genre in the dystopian settings, like in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" (a 1971 movie) or Philip K.Dick's "The Minority Report" (which is not really dystopian but has the futuristic sense that is part of the cyberpunk overall atmosphere - I'm talking about the short story here, not the movie).

BTW, just as an aside, the movie Blade Runner was also based in a Philip K.Dick's novel, and it's called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?".

While I was reading the thread I was wondering why nobody had mentioned this game. And I second your recommendation.

Well AFAIK isn't Blade Runner what started the cyberpunk genre ?

As for the game... it was meant to be a graphic adventure, while it plays like one sometimes it feels more like an interactive movie... not bad overall, the graphics are a killer, even for its time (1998).

If you enjoy cyberpunk atmospheric games I strongly suggest Blade Runner...
