What has been or is the worst videogame television program and who has been the worst host/hostess for such a program? Please exclude award shows.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

Video game television show? Do you mean shows like X-Play, GSN Videogames or Electric Playground?

Well, GSN Videogames has the best hostess (Carmen Nicole). She's so freaking cute unlike Morgan on X Play who is just a pair of walking breasts. I haven't seen Electric Playground in a long time and don't even know if it still comes on.

I don't about worst host or hostess but the guy who does music for game companies that co-hosts Electric Playground is rather annoying for me.

BTW, people that don't know what channel some of these video game shows come on.

X-Play comes on TechTV.

GSN Videogames comes on Gameshow Network (GSN).

Electric Playground last time I checked came on Discovery Science channel. I don't have that channel anymore unfortunately.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

The worst by far would have to be Video & Arcade Top 10. You watch a bunch of kids play video games only to win lame prizes cause they can't afford much more. The hosts are lame, the set was dull and there really was no content to watch.

Modern day shows usually start off pretty well and then get sidetracked with inside jokes and stupid skits that ruin the show. One show that was awesome was a trivia/game show where they answer questions and the winner gets to run through a maze of game shelves and stuck as many games to their velcro suit as possible. I think it was called Video Power. It was great for kids that could never dream of buying so many games.

I guess things are different now that games are so mainstream and its the first thing parents think to get their kids. Gaming shows nowadays are mostly to hype and advertise which you read about on the net anyways so there really isn't anything fresh. Although I haven't seen any actual episodes of Mega64 (www.mega64.com) as it is a local show somewhere else, it looked like it ran into the same pitfalls as most shows. The Shenmue clip was brilliant but they started to use their own twisted humour the general populous won't find interesting.

I guess gaming shows won't ever die out but very few have done them very well.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

Oh! I remember a show where these kids had to pass a certain part of the level in a game or get a certain amount of points to get prizes or something. Is that "Video and Arcade Top 10?" I think it was on Nickelodeon or something.

Damn, I also remember that show where kids got a whole bunch of games stuck to their velcro suit and they kept those games. I was jealous of those bastards.

Man, that was a looooooooong time ago. I can't believe someone still remembers that. You must be around my age or older. Those shows were a long time ago.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

Electric Playground would be the worst. There reviews are like months behind and I swear members here know more than those guys do.

X-Play is good, but Adam can be kinda retarded at times. Not that i'm complaining.

It's all the same crap

Re: worst videogame television program ?

hmmmmm in my country such programs are quite rare (only saw one in a regional channel that had pretty good previews, but it was cancelled) and then there is this one that was broadcasted on a mexican channel (TV7, or canal 13) which was called nintendo mania..... man, it sucked, it was pure advertisements, and the few content the program had was spoiled as 80% of it was the hosts talking, while what i wanted was to actually see the games....

Re: worst videogame television program ?

I find the GSN videogames hostess to be annoying and vapid.
She is as much a gamer as Exodus' spider solitaire playing sister.
What would she do without a teleprompter or cue cards?

Yeah it seems that she's not into video games but I don't care. I think she is so cute. I just wait for the video game reviews to be over and wait for her face to appear on screen.

But seriously, she doesn't have to know anything about video games because other people review the games. All she's there is to sit down, read and look pretty which works for me.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

There is an all video game channel on cable (I forget the name of the channel) and almost every program on there sucks. I love X-Play. I've never seen a better video game show and I like the fact that the hosts, Morgan and Adam, are the ones who actually review the game (and the fact that they are really cool).

Re: worst videogame television program ?

I remember a show called nintendocontrol. There were kids playing against each other in order to get the price: the chance of playing against the other 3 "lucky guys" in a set emulating the world of mario. Yes, they had to introduce themselves in a pipe and then jump over a guy disguised as a goomba and run and then crawl under a block emulating the mario ones.....The only good thing was the final prize: a metal gear game for the nes.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

I think the whole idea of videogame shows or channels are cheesy, they are bound to suck i like playing games and all but its just a past time, nothing to broadcast on TV you know. I rememeber an old show back in the 80s that was about video games anbd even then i thought it was cheesy but oh well.
I think tourneys are cool tho, but like i said is nothing to put on TV.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

I only recently got cable, so I did not even know about these shows, bu the only one that I've seen is GSN Videogames.
Hostess is cute, but sometimes the ugly people from Gamespy come over to do a segment.
Not that bad, but is lacking various things, but it is TV after all.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

Video & Arcade Top 10 is by far the dumbest of them all (from my experience) - it gives unless tips that can be found out in the manuals of the game - here is an example "for mario to jump - simply press the A button" - come on what kind of dumb kids do they think play video games.....

also they get dumb kids to play crappy games and do stupid competition tasks
here is an example "the winner will be the player with the most health after 8 min"

man if the kids weren't so dumb they could probably realize that they could just did nothing -(pause the game) - and they would have perfect health and win

Video Power was great - I still remember the kid who won some gameboy games and said "But, I don't even have a Game Boy."

haha and I also remember the kids running through the "game maze" would always go after the I think neo geo system and power gloves and stuff hahah good times....

I also remember a decent video game show way back I think it was called Arcade -- it was (I think) on ytv or something - and had two teams of two kids playing some game with a maze (animated on a screen - and they had to move the character to different space - and do certain video game challenges with timelimits (like for example collect 2000 points in sonic 1 in under 30 seconds) - the maps were kinda like the mario 3 style and at the end the winner of the game would have to fight bosses and stuff in a kind of blue screen environment (collect orbs and dodge fireballs - climb ladders) - wow I miss that show

worst videogame tv show. most definitely StarCade or Arena on G4. who cares about watching people play games like they were sports or something.

on StarCade, the host (you can tell) knows absolutely nothing about videogames. he reads off of cards for petes sake! on top of that, the weirdest people you ever thought imaginable go on the show. (starcade is an 80s arcade show, fyi)

in Arena, there is this huge all-american dude that is overly excited about seeing polygons get destroyed on a screen. and there is some british guy that looks like a weasel with glasses and makes the corniest jokes you ever heard. besides the hosts, the show is pointless. they play mechwarrior 4, unreal tournament 2003 and play capture the flag. some of the players 'really' suck. it must be cool to be there and play, but, imo, who cares about watching it?

enough about that.

cinematech and judgement day on G4 are definitely two shows worth watching.

edit: if a show about a certain game qualifies for this thread, Donkey Kong Country was the worst videogame show series ever.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

best videogame show is Nick Arcade from old Nickelodeon. they show that on "Nick Games and Sports" (digital cable) all the time. the number of laughs ive had watching that show late at night with my friend far exceeds any other lame gameshow, let me tell you.

Re: worst videogame television program ?

Does anyone remember the show with the bald guy who only appeared inside a TV? That was when gaming shows really took a dive. Started off with two guys playing the same game only half paying attention to the host and one guy wins. Yay. Follow that up with some stupid skit, then a preview and then a secret code for a game. Wow.

I also remember a show that talked about comic books and video games. It was another brilliant YTV production full of retarded skits and jokes that weren't remotely funny.

I guess video game shows just aren't meant to be on TV. For long anyways. Even if someone were to do it right, its such a niche viewer base that it could never get much more airtime than an infomercial. At this point, I doubt we'll be seeing any shows like we have in the past which is sad really as I'd enjoy the nostalgia. The fact is that the internet is too good of a resource for screenshots, movies, interviews, etc - everything there is about a game can be found. Rumours which play a big part of the game market nowadays are a big attraction on the net as well and that's something a show would not be able to reproduce.

In a way its killed the hype for a game. I remember reading game magazines cover to cover, and being really surprised to find cool game codes. I'd buy games based on the box art or the description of the story on the back alone sometimes. Now every developer has instant feedback on what a game should be and it has worked for them up to a point but I think it has limited creativity just because no one wants to go against the grain anymore. You hardly see anything truly inspiring and I think its one reason why games don't have the old feel to them. It was bound to get overexposed but I'm just ranting now.

Oh yeah, Video Power and Saved by the Bell back to back was my power hour back in the early days of high school. Watching someone winning a Neo Geo actually got me excited for them haha those were the days... LMAO at the GameBoy kid
