FFVII - How to cast "Ultima"?

I've just gotten the 'Ultima" materia but I can't cast it! I can equip it normally but on the materia status screen the "ultima" ability is grayed-out which means I can't use it and on the battle screen the spell doesn't appear on the list Am I supposed to level the materia up first? If not, what should I do?

He's right. I think you have to get... something like 5000ap before you can use it. Really not much considering how far into the game you have to be when you get it.

Have fun with it!! It's the best offensive magic, also the Contain materia is kick ass, IIRC you had to level that one up first also.

No. You can initially cast magic when you got the Contain Materia at the first time.

IIRC, those which need leveling up before casting magic is Ultima, Shield and Full Heal.

well on the floor of the meeting room is a red materia: Ramuh. well, one of the book's HORRIBLE HORRIBLE unchecked typos is that they put it in there as "Ranch Materia".
