Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

Okie, here I am, asking for your technical help once more....

today, I got SH2 PC, then I was going to install it, and I came through lotsa problems (then I realized that was due to picking different CD drives through installation, and my crappy drives as well ), then, when I finally installed it, I was going to run it, and then, each time I click on "options" and "movies", the game crashes and exits to desktop; when I click New game>1st story, then it shows the bathroom fmv and then it freezes (I have to push reset); when I choose New game> 2nd story, I can play a little, but after some minutes after I leave the hotel, then the game freezes again, as my computer, and I have to push reset again..... any ideas on what's going on and how do i solve it?

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

What is your video card?
I had a similar problem with my GeForce FX, and downloading a patch solved the problem.

Wait a moment and I'll see if I find the link here

EDIT: I found out the page with the patches: http://www.konami.com/usa/support.shtml

You should try to download and apply both patches. I hope it solves your problem.

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

well, already checked the links and IT DIDN'T WORK!!!!!

well, after some research I found out that it was due to a bad install, plus some background stuff conflicting with the game, and conflictive drivers, which had to be reinstalled....

phew, after 3 hours of sysadmining I finally could make it run decently... but then I could not access the options menu yet... so i had to edit the settings file manually (really sucks) and then i could add fog, hi-res textures, etc...

now 1 question:

- does the game plays on such low resolution? I mean, it looks like 640*480 with hi res textures (only the textures)

and now some facts after playing a little:

-man, this game is TOUGH!... those walkinf stuff sure endure a lot of damage

-this game if by far one of the creepiest ever... man, I am plying with the lights off and in complete silence... and it freaked me out a couple of times

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

could be due to the fact that SH2 uses a noise filter.

That's how the game looks on my system. That's without the noise filter.

1. You should disable the noise filter. It makes the game look crappy (IMO, of course)

2. Are you playing on hard? The game isn't that tough in Normal.

3. I agree. When I was playing it a 3 AM it was very creepy - my heart jumped several times.

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

takmadeus disable the lensflare or lens something under the options menu, that caused me a lot of glitches and lags, after doing that the game ran smoothly.

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

well..... here goes my settings file...

SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_FOG_ON 1
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_SHADOWS_ON 1
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_LENS_FLARE_ON 1
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_MOTION_BLUR_ON 0
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_DEPTH_OF_FIELD_ON 0
SET DX_CONFIG_RES 2
SET DX_CONFIG_USE_LORES_TEXTURES 0
SET DX_CONFIG_3D_SOUND_HARDWARE 0
SET DX_CONFIG_3D_SOUND_HARDWARE_AVAILABLE 0
SET DX_CONFIG_BRIGHTNESS 3
SET DX_CONFIG_SCREEN_POS_X 0
SET DX_CONFIG_SCREEN_POS_Y 0
SET DX_CONFIG_NOISE 0

yeah, the noise filter sucks..... tried using Quincunx filtering and now the game looks awesome; note that I could use resconf 3 (1024*768) but as my crappy temporal monitor does not suport it, I have to stick with 2...

anyway, I haven't been able to enter the options menu without SH2 crashing, do you know how to fix this?

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

IMO Silent Hill W/O Noise filter is not Silent Hill at all (although SH1 Doesn't has this option) , so i prefer Noise

/me looking at your .ini

My suggestion is

SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_FOG_ON 1
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_SHADOWS_ON 1
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_LENS_FLARE_ON 1
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_MOTION_BLUR_ON 1 (Don't know if this game support this function but set it on is better)
SET DX_CONFIG_EFFECT_DEPTH_OF_FIELD_ON 1 (Look better in cinematic scene)
SET DX_CONFIG_RES 2
SET DX_CONFIG_USE_LORES_TEXTURES 0
SET DX_CONFIG_3D_SOUND_HARDWARE 1 ( if you have multi speaker system , it's so creepy hearing monster roaring behind you)
SET DX_CONFIG_3D_SOUND_HARDWARE_AVAILABLE 1 (if you have EAX support hardware)
SET DX_CONFIG_BRIGHTNESS 3
SET DX_CONFIG_SCREEN_POS_X 0
SET DX_CONFIG_SCREEN_POS_Y 0
SET DX_CONFIG_NOISE 0 (you said that you don't like this function , so leaving it off )

About option problem . Try to update your vga drv ( mine using 30.82 without any problem)

P.s. If you like horror game , you have to Play Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 3 .
IMO Silent Hill 3 Is creepiest game in the series > Silent Hill 1 > Silent Hill 2 .

Strange that Silent Hill 2 Support Multi speaker setup but Silent Hill 3 Only support Stereo (and Mono )

I really like this pic not so creepy but i think it's cool.

Re: Silent Hill 2 PC: big problems....

hmmmmm I tried 30.82 with no luck..... I should be unlucky, I guess... anyway, I contacted konami for support on this one, but somehow I think it'll take ages for them to answer me, so..... is there any way to fix that "options crash" thing?

BTW, PrTv..... seems that my card does ot support motion blur, nor depth of field, but I'll check the sound options and tell you later
