Re: Clash of consoles

OK, I think it's fair enough to revive this topic after such a long time.

I own/owned an Atari 2600 and Jaguar, a Gameboy, NES, SNES and N64, a Gamegear, Master System, Megadrive (Genesis), SegaCD, Saturn and Dreamcast, a PSX and a PS2. Most things really. Of those I don't own, I have played on the X-Box and Gamecube.

Of all of them, my favorite is probably the PS2. Reasons being:
  1. Massive game library, as it includes not only some of the finest games (including some of the finest RPGs) from the PSX, but some top notch games from this generation including FFX, Kingdom Hearts and Xenosaga
  2. The Pad is without a doubt the finest pad I've ever used, possibly only second to the original SNES pad. All the buttons are accessable, there aren't to many, all buttons are analog, the digital and analog sticks are perfectly positioned so as not to pull my thumb off and they don't strip the skin from my fingers. The built in rumble is well implemented too.
  3. The graphics, while not often as flashy as say the GC or the X-Box, still look pretty damn spectacular
  4. DTS support from many games
  5. Progressive scan support from newer games.
Personaly, I'm not fan of the Cube. I really am not a fan of the pad, and the games that I've had the chance to play (apparently the best on the system ) kinda suck. Maybe they just don't appeal to my taste

The X-Box has some fine games on it and the pad, while big, is surprisingly comfortable. I only played a couple of games on it; DoA3 and Panzer Dragoon, Orta, but they look pretty amazing and the gameplay is solid.

The DC had some solid games, but not enough in quantity, not enough released to the west, and not enough advertising. It also had one of the most annoying pads ever created. The graphics were alright, but I've heard some people say that it was on the same level as the PS2 and this is simply not true. Look at Soul Calibur and DoA2 Two of hte best looking games on the system. Then look at Tekken 4 and Soul Calibur 2 on the PS2. The DC was strong in texturing, but can't push the polys needed IMO.

As for the PSX, I think I've basicaly covered that in hte PS2. It has probably hte best game library on any system. Admittedly the graphics look slightly dated now, but it's still a strong system on the quality of hte games themselves.

The Saturn was essentialy a flop. Yes it had some great games on it (Shining Force 3 among others), but the gems were few and far between, and it had one of Sega's trademark ill-concieved pads. The Saturn pad is terrible.

The N64 was also a flop to me. It has dick all games I will play. The only reason I keep it is so that I can go over to Adi's place and play 4-player Goldeneye. Everything else on it basicaly sucks.

Shall I bother going back much further? Well I'll cover a couple of the main players in the 16-bit war.

The Mega Drive vs the Snes.
  • Graphics: SNES The Genesis was lacking in colours and special features next to the SNES with it's superFX and crap like that, but the Genesis had some damn fine speed behind it. In the end the SNES' graphical advantages became apparent in many games. The SNES games simply looked more.. full I think is the best word.
  • Sound: SNES. There is only one game you need to look at to see the SNES' phonic superiority: the Mega Drive Street Fighter Port. It's horrible. the sounds are just *shudders*. Then you have the beautiful musics of Final Fantasy 6 and Secret of Mana compared to the well-composed yet still decidedly tinny and lacking music from Shining Force 2 and Streets of Rage 2. And if you want to see really bad Genesis music, look no futher than the atrosity that is Streets of Rage 3.
  • Pad: SNES. This is a no brainer if you look at the default pads. On the one hand you have the small and comfortable SNES pad with readily accessable buttons compared to the Genesis chunky monster which hurts your hands after long spells. The 6-button pad was a vast improvement however, with 6 face buttons simplyfying gmaes like Street Fighter. However, i nthe end, after utilising a multitude of pads over many years, I can say that the 4 face buttons design is far more accessable. The only games that become awkward the shoulder triggers are SF style games which use 3 punches and kicks. In all other situations it's far more sensible to have shoulder triggers.
  • Games: Draw. This is a far more difficult one to match as on the one hand we have the RPG goodness of Final Fantasy, Secret of Mana, Romancing Saga and the mighty Chrono Trigger, squaring (pardon the pun) it off agains't Sega's Sonic, Streets of Rage, Phantasy Star, Shining Force and innovative titles like Comix Zone. In the end I was loathe to, but I had to call it a draw.
  • Overall: Draw I couldn't bring myself to give the SNES this award. Although the graphics, sound, music and pads are better, the only thing that should ever matter is the games, which the SNES and MD are so tight on it's not real. What's more impressive however is that 2 companies practicaly single handedly stoked the best games for each system. On the one hand, Square for Nintendo, and on the other, Sega's in house developers.

Re: Clash of consoles

I believe PS/PS2 is the best system so far . Dreamcast would take second place if it were still a major competitor. As for Nintendo, they have become the little brother/sister's gaming company and the X-BOX is......well its just a wide, humongous black BOX that looks like a 'VCR' from the future (personal opinion of course).

Re: Clash of consoles

yeha but the X-box has better online gaming facilities than other consoles not to mention 8gb of hardsk needing no memory card. Also you can put your own songs on the harddisk and listen while playing games (i've tried it in thps4 and nfs hot pursuit 2).

Re: Clash of consoles

Xbox is technically strong with it specs.

But PS2 is the monster in gaming market. Its like I say everywhere.

It is just politics, Sony gives you more games to play and supports its machine. XBox( Microsoft) has yet to learn the new terrains of Console Industry.

I own A GC, and a PS2 and it's not like I hate Xbox.Just let me get a few bucks in my hand, I'll get an Xbox too.

Re: Clash of consoles

i dont like the custom soundtrack option in the Xbox. i really dont. that's what a stereo is for, and in my case, my computer. i have 11,000+ tracks on my computer; if i want music that's where ill look. also, in the new GTA games the custom soundtrack really ruins the mood. of course, that is all personal opinion.

i have played the Xbox for many hours; playing through Halo many times, TMNT all the way through, the GTAs, project gotham, MGS2: substance , etc etc etc. the point is that i have spent A LOT of time with the Xbox and i must say: I LOVE THE FATTY CONTROLLER.

-it fits my hand: i have big hands (long fingers actually) which fit around this controller very well.
-the analog sticks are nearly perfect: i cant decide between this and PS2. they just feel so...nice.
-the rumble feels good: it's not crappy and cheesy like N64 was (IMO)
-that detachable cord is a good idea!: after many many Halo parties, it's a blessing, trust me

however:
-the black and white buttons suck...seriously
-the dpad sucks as well

AND

-the system is humongous
-ugly as all hell
-the new, "S" type controller falls below even the DC on my list of crappy controllers. i hate it.

so, that's my opinion on the Xbox. i think it's good...but, it will always be behind PS2/PSX, SNES, NES, Gameboy, and N64 on my top 5 list, forever. (as you can see i was a huge nintendo fan until the PSX and Final Fantasy 7 came along...changed my life )

Re: Clash of consoles

It's not console that matter, but the games you can play on it

Got a Master System II long ago
then it was Snes, with games like Secret of Mana, Super Metroid, etc... such games made Snes become one of my prefered consoles

Then PSX, with its lot of shoot games and RPGs
...my top1 console ATM (never played PS2 yet)

Now I have a Dreamcast with a few games, I switch it on when I have nothing better to do

Oh, also had a N64 when PSX died (again),
I essentialy played Goldeneye, WcW vs Nwo Revenge, F0-X, and overall, Perfect Dark
...I still wonder why I bought this stupid console

Re: Clash of consoles

As many of you know we are a game enthusiast, and have followed console history for years (longer then most of you have walked this earth).

No machine can be considered "The Best"..Each has strengths and weakness. At most a gamer can do is highlight the best aspects of each system. Some of which have already been mentioned. Basically in the end it comes down to games.

As far as the next gen systems and comparisons.
On screen graphics look the worst on PS2..but not by much. However we noticed that the PS2 emotion engine VU's make up for it with screen animations. If you took a screenshot like most sites do it will never tell the tale. PS2 games that take advantage of the VU's add extra background animations, shadow changes, weather transitions, etc. The GC and Xbox cannot handle the same amount of onscreen animations as PS2. We also find the PS2 controller design (also PS1, and things borrowed from SNES). and the largest library with many low cost titles (love Greatest Hits line)

Xbox..talk about a nice package. HD..Eternet...by far the best onscreen graphic displays. The prob? Many of the games we are interested in wind up on PC anyways. Either that or on GC / PS2..and since we are not that much of a graphics whore...we would most likely go with another platform. Star Wars KOTOR and Halo had us interested in Xbox...now as of the 18th they are released on PC with extra goodies . Nice machine though.

Gamecube..there are many who don't like this machine. We however love it. small and hide away. Graphics midway between Xbox and PS2. Believe it or not the games could look better if programmers want it...well sort of...You see the Gamecube can produce the most graphic textures on screen at one time then the other machines...decent controller design, but fails in fighting games. The disk format is cool, but may be the reason why their reduced priced games (Platinum line) are still $10 more then Xbox and PS2 reduced line . Some good game exclusives. The GBPlayer add on added value to our lil cube...It is like having a SNES on some steroids...and some of the connectivity concepts are cool....All in all the 3 are impressive machines, but none can be dubbed "Greatest"

Our other co- "Old skool" gamer sxamiga is also the proud owner of all 3 next gen systems. He may also share his views of them.

Re: Clash of consoles

A forenote: All the nest-gen systems are lacklustre compared to the Snes.

GC is my favourite of the next-gen because it has the best multiplayer games, best platform games, and excellent graphics. Also, Nintendo make the best games, when they pull their finger out.

Regarding the Snes, (which I feel is the best console ever released) Only a "casual gamer whose first console was a PSX because it was 'cool'" retard would say that Ninty classics such as:

Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario World
Yoshi's Island
Super Metroid
Super Mario Kart
Zelda: A Link to the Past

...are crap. I've been playing these games for years and they are still as fun as I first played them. Just look at their reviews on websites or multi-format mags- never under 90%. For the Final Fantasy fanboys, 1-6 were on Nintendo consoles before PSX.

The PSX was mostly crap IMO. No platformers to compete with Super Mario 64, so there was no point in buying one since it is my favourite genre. Very few games worth playing here for my tastes.

As for fighting games, well, nothing on PS2 or XBox can even touch four-player Super Smash Bros. Melee [Nintendo]. NOTHING! I played this game continuously for months and the fun never stopped. I still play it now. GC also has Soul Caliber 2 with Link in with slightly improved graphics over PS2, although I don't like these types of games very much.

Racing games- GC now has Mario Kart Double Dash [Nintendo], which it is play online, and F-Zero GX [Sega] which are two extremely good racers which are fun addictive games (which some PS2 owners dismiss as 'kiddy' but they are really trying to kid themselves that the PS2 games are any better. Just because it has a 15 certificate DOES NOT means its GOOD! Also a five year old could not get 120 Shine Sprites in Super Mario Sunshine, no way. Kiddy my arse.

The PS2 probably has more kiddy games than the GC. Most ignore the fact that the PS2 has all the Brittany Spears games, every Disney game under the sun, Spyro and Crash, Pop Idol- all 3rd party crap that isn't worth dirt on my shoe. The GC thank god is spared of most of this "I'll make a quick buck releasing this ****" attitude of certain games developers.

Some typical arguements against the GC:
"There are more RPGs on PS2" they say.
There are more times more RPGs on the Snes than PS2 and they are also longer and more fun with no boring FMV BS that fills up those DVDs. Square are developing for PC and GC now quite a bit too now so more RPGs for me.

"GC does not have DVD movie support like XBox or PS2"
I bought a GC not to watch films. If I want to watch films I'd buy a decent [£150] DVD player or use my PC which displays everything in super resolution anyway.

"PS2 has more market share"
No ****. Well parents do buy PS2s for their kids because they have never heard of a GC or XBox because they aren't advertised as much. If you bought the console solely because of market share, then that is pretty retarded. You look to the games- each console has its fair share of good games, pick one based on that.

This post is directed to PS2 owners that slate the GC and say its crap before even picking up a controller. This angers me when the console they have is no better, it about the same 'goodness' all in all. Pfft. PS2 is a good system, but slating others without playing is wrong.

My favourite console of all time was the SEGA MegaDrive (a.k.a Genesis).

Then, Playstation/2.

But, my favourite gaming machine is my PC.

Re: Clash of consoles

I like PS2 due to its backward compatibility, library of games, the pads, and graphics. However, if games is not a factor, i'd definitely get an Xbox due to its harddrive and 4 controller port. As things stand right now, PS2 cost more, yet offer a lot less. Again, that's when games aren't taken into consideration. And since games' all that matters, i bought a PS2

-Wouldn't say Playstation by a long shot. Not to my tastes as I said before. Snes for me.

-Nintendo isn't worst software developer by any stretch of the imagination- thats fanboyism talking, ever heard of 3DO and it's Army Men games? They are better than Advance Wars, Super Mario 64, Zelda, Super Mario Kart or Super Metroid...? Bah!!!!! You do not play very many games it seems How many Ninty games do you play? I've played almost all of them to death and only a few duds so far. Without Ninty there would be no good games at all. Seriously, you think corperate 'only in it for the money' companies like EA are better than Nintendo at making games? I doubt that some how.

The Game Gear is not the best handheld- it is a handheld Master System that sucked batteries dry in about two hours. I don't know many good GG games, since only about 100 were ever released for the system before the GB crushed it. I'd say GBA is best. The GBA is flooded with horrible 3rd-party games though, but it does have loads of RPGs coming out now such as Sword of Mana, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, Lufia: Ruins of Lore, Golden Sun, Tales of Phantasia and the list keeps going... also backwards compatibilty with GB and GBC. The GBA is very similar to the original Playstation in the amount of good games and choice.

Can't dispute Sega. They are good an make many games for the GC now so I'm very happy. They are among the best developers in the World.

based strictly on games, i choose SNES and PSX. with PSX in the lead simply because it has pretty graphics. PS2 would probably beat it, but i dont have one, so i can't say.

Re: Clash of consoles

of the current ones, PS2 is what I would consider the best because of its huge and impressive library of games.
as Kane says, DC falls short on impressive titles, and really cant keep up with the graphics the current 3 big ones produce.
Of all time...hm, well maybe the first Playstation. HUGE game library and ultra-popular. Even though the saturn was awesome in its own right (sporting some very special and impressive titles) the PS was/is overall far more impressive, but , like the PS2, mainly so because of the game library; the actual hardware leaves something to be desired. N64 could have been good with more developers and a CD drive, but aside from a handful of good titles, it failed (IMO its also a lot worse than the Saturn)
Snes and Megadrive are awesome too; like Kane, I find it hard to decide which is the better one.
well, that's it for now, I could start a whole story about how I love MSX but thats not really a console
