Silent hill 2 Weapons Question

Does a new weapone pop up every time you start a new game? 2nd time i found a chain saw, and 3rd some friggin spray paint can.. wtf does that do??

The chainsaw appears the 2nd time you play
the Spray has different effects on different enemies depending on the color it has...

the color itself depends of how many stars you got so far (ranking at the end of the game)
