Half Life 2 Performance revealed

Valve is pissed at all of the benchmarking "optimizations" they've seen in the hardware community;

Half-Life 2 has a special NV3x codepath that was necessary to make NVIDIA's architecture perform reasonably under the game;

Valve recommends running geforce fx 5200 and 5600 cards in dx8 mode in order to get playable frame rates.

even with the special NV3x codepath, ATI is the clear performance leader under Half-Life 2 with the Radeon 9800 Pro hitting around 60 fps at 10x7. The 5900 ultra is noticeably slower with the special codepath and is horrendously slower under the default dx9 codepath;

the Radeon 9600 Pro performs very well - it is a good competitor of the 5900 ultra;

ATI didn't need these special optimizations to perform well and Valve insists that they have not optimized the game specifically for any vendor.

Interesting. If this true, I find this funny. However, you have to remember, Valve has been workign closely with ATI, even if they didn't optimize their games for ATI, the fact that they worked to together meant that they probably designed the game around ATI's strengths and weaknesses in their current line of cards.

Hehe, also, look at this link: Valve lets off steam over NVIDIA performance

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

I am quite dissapointed in NVidia for making such crappy DX9 support. I see now why their demos are in OpenGL.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

To be fair, we have to wait until we have independant Hl2 benchmarks to say if NVidia's hardware sucks or not with this game. But I won't be surprised if these numbers are proven correct.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

Hm...I might be able to play this game. I don't care much about detail. That gun that can grap and throw stuff looks like sooooo much fun. Thank god for DX8 mode.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

It's a D3D game which the Voodoo's really aren't good at (talking Dx7 and beyond anyway). It lacks even HW T&L, which is a staple for any game these days, and HL2 may even need a Dx8 card which would really phuck you.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

i hope my rig can run it, 8x6 perhaps? im not sure how my card will handle it. and my ram is low. what do u guys think about nvdia's response to this issue? maybe the det 50 drivers will give them a big boost, i just hope they don't cheat on this one...and any other game/benchmark for that matter

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

The best way to tell is wait till Spetember 30th when the benchmark is scheduled to come out. If i could run it at 800x600 with lowish detail, I'll be happy.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

Anandtech just did their own benchmarking of HL2, and the results look, well... very bad for NVidia.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

sigh... all this drama is just going to cause nvidia to release some new line of cards.
so sad for nvidia, but also a very bad omen for HL2.

Re: Half Life 2 Performance revealed

no, they're done with the numbers now. or, it'll just be FX2 next. but not to worry, it will be something unoriginal.
