Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

today i was getting a new version od my beloved final fantasy 7 for PC (my old one was broken)
but cant get it to run with D3D (i got a Ati Radeon 9600TX) it didnt want to because of this ****** 8-bit paletted textures that isnt included in the cataclyst drivers i think. I was trying the XP patch but the game didnt start with the nvidia fix funny is after copying the old backup files backagain 8while the xp patch was installed) it was running all writtings are grey and iam just seeing the figures (the fights are running with only little problems).

is there something to get this paletted textures back in the drivers or any other way?
cause if i cant fix it i will have to sell it again

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

Found this article on ati's site:

http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/3689.html

Maybe you better sell the game and buy the ps version instead, it works and looks great on ePSXe you know.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

Doesn't the pc version have 2 modes: software and glide? My friend has the pc version and he runs the software mode and it seems to be ok other than running slow.

edit: here is what the ati article sez.

These games will still run without 8-bit palletized texture support.
Final Fantasy VIII - select Direct3D or software rendering, according to your preference
Final Fantasy VII - select software rendering

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

But trading it in for the PS version is a good point to consider, because the PC version really sucks in many aspects.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

Ya I would have to say that the ps version is better. Nicer movies and MUCH better music.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

PC mode has 2 modes. Direct3d Hardware acceleration and Software. the Original D3d might as well of been glide.

It seems only Voodoo cards can run it problem free ansd very old ATI cards

I really suggest just using the emu. It's not worth the headache for the low res graphics

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

trust me buddy, i have a Radeon 32mb. because the 8bit paletted textures faild you will be forced to run it in software renderer and in that Quater screen thing, otherwise it wont work properly.

the funny thing is they never bothered to fix this, and their where plenty of other things they never bothered to fix too with FF7PC.. wow, where to begin with that.

your better off trying your luck with the emulator and see how that works

by the way.. on the edios website it says that the game doesnt support ati ANYTHING cards because of the 8bit problem.. its kindof funny though, with FF8 atleast i could force it to work with the Gforce patch, but you cant do this with 7

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

Yeah but with 7 it never let me applied it,because it was reconizing my ATi card o r something.. i dont really remember. its been awhile. but with 8 it was easy to forced the damn thing on their, since it was just a zip file containing the .exe and everything. FF7pc was actualy the reason why i bought a psx

I will agree also that FF VII for PSX is miles superior to FF VII for PC. I have both and have played both and I perfer the PSX version. The only credit I will give FF VII for PC is that it is the game that first got me started on and interested in 3d cards. I wanted the hardware acceleration and so did my son. So I'll give the game credit for that, but that is about all I'll give it credit for.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

Well with all the various 3rd party patches, F7 PC ends up only lacking in hte movies department.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

i agree, they did a very bad job with the movies. eidos shouldve used the blink system but i dunno why they didnt. Recording the movies in an avi format at Quarter screen resolution sacrifices a lot of quality that the psx version has.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

The problem with the movies wasn't the resoloution. The problem was that they were rendered originaly in 24-bit. If you try and play them on a 16-bit desktop in Windows, they'll be fine, but they used some fecked up mode to play them which makes them look utter cack.

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

that explains alot of it... i was running my desktop in 24bit high collor. you think it would improve the game play but it wont... the one thing that really bugged me about FF7PC was they had about 2 crashes in the game that they never bothered to fix. and their way of fixing it is to give a save game. if i remeber it correctly it was after cloud gave seperoth the black materia in the cave. all the weapons start flyin out. one of them.. (the purple one?) comes out of the hole, it screams. the game crashes. THAT was horribly gay. and they just uploaded a save game past that point with their matria setings, and level stats. which was kindof sad because the level my materia was at was alot higher than what they gave us...

Thanks

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

I would assume that since there is a glide mode and that the voodoo5 is an older card that it would support it. Guess there is a good reason to have a voodoo card other than for emulation .

Re: Final Fantasy 7 on ati radeon?

Yes. All Voodoo cards support this.

@Raiden: What I meant was you can play the AVI files in Windows and they'll look OK, but hte in game renderer feck them up.
