DISCover: a game console that plays any PC game!

Ok, now this seems pretty cool. The DISCover system is a console being developed that'll play any PC game. Just drop the game in and play it in your living room. The console itself is PC based, sort of like the Phantom, but it operates totally differently. They say: " DISCover is a PC game console - a game console that plays unmodified PC games. As with a PlayStation or Xbox, you simply drop the disc into the console and play. The difference is the video game consoles can only play games made for their proprietary formats, while the DISCover can play the thousands of available PC titles. There are two major groups of video gamers for whom the DISCover will appeal: Video game console players who wish to step up to the PC gaming experience without the hassles of installing and running computer programs and PC gamers who want the experience of playing PC games on a big screen TV in the living room with the simplicity of a game console."

Additionally, it'll have online capabilities so you can even play things like Everquest on it. (this is bad news for friends of Everquest fans...now they'll never leave their couch). They're thinking the price for the lowest-end unit will be about $299. "DISCover's entry-level unit will feature minimum specifications of approximately: 512 MB of memory, integrated 3D accelerator, a 1 GHz Pentium-class processor, 40 GB hard drive. Higher-end units will feature specs such as: Intel D875PBZ Motherboard, Pentium 4, 3.2 GHz, 1 GB DDR PC3200, 52x24x52x16x CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive, Seagate Barracuda 120 GB HD, NVIDIA GeForce&153; FX 5900 Ultra 256MB 8x AGP w/DVI & S-Video, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum - 6.1 w/Black Audigy 2 Drive." All models will play DVDs & Mp3s too. LAN support's included too, of course.

Overall, I think this system sounds sweet. You'll never have to worry too much about upgrading your pc for a game again (doomIII fans?), never have to worry about buggy installs taking time or ****ing up your computer, and can play on that big screen tv in your living room instead of shelling out $1500 for a 19" flat screen (come on, how many of us would have really nice monitors if it wasn't for gaming? though this doesn't apply for those of us who've already combined TV&monitor). I don't think this'll replace the PC gaming industry, and it probably won't even be successful. But I think it definitely sounds interesing. The prototype was at this year's E3, and they want it to be released sometime 2004, I think. Sorry this is so long; hope this hasn't been posted before... Here's some shots:

(corrected the problem w/ the shots, thanks) Yeah, again, while the idea sounds nice, I think it might take more than a cool system to break people away from their PCs. Using my computer, even the hassles of configuring games or upgrading, always has an element of geeky fun to it. We all *like* PCs , and that might be the biggest problem. (Sort of like the lack of real success for e-books despite their advantages). But I still think the system has its own advantages that might find it an audience.

well this might work, some ppl hate upgrading there pc when a game that uses new graphics technology comes out and this would be perfect for those ppl, but that would be no fun

I think they're going to have an automatic patching system in place too. The console will automatically download all patches for any games you have. That's handy. In terms of money, it might be worthwhile since it does its gaming thing, plays DVDs & mp3s, and you don't have to buy a Sidewinder or psx controller usb adapter.

Stickin to the Good Ol' Desktop PC...You would have to ahve a really good processor to play ANY game because new games come out all the time that are better than the ones before

Yeah, as I said, pulling us away from our PCs is going to be difficult. Do you think the console will flop totally, or find a niche amongst less-geeky PC users, gamers who hate to upgrade, etc. etc.?

the console will never flop...never needs upgrades...plays what you buy...and can be taken places...cost considerably less than a PC...its just what people want...i mean i have a PS2 and PC...why in the world do i need both? i have no idea...

As far as I know, they're beta testing Phantom. Though I have pretty much no interest in phantom, the pay as you go, streaming games format doesn't appeal to me.

OK. Number of reasons why this won't work

Consoles sell well because of exclusive games and they aren't as prohibitivly expensive as PC (at least regarding games machines). This thing has no exclusive titles
The target demographic will already have a decent PC.
A small company like this simply wont have the funds to make it work. Look how hard Microsoft had to work to get the X-Box off the ground in the states, nevermind the rest of the world. This isn't a market you can jsut walk in to

yeah, i have my 'console' that plays any pc game. its called a PC.

this isn't going to make it in the industry. especially at the pace that PC games push the hardware. it'd be old in a few months.

I think they're going to have an automatic patching system in place too. The console will automatically download all patches for any games you have. That's handy.
