Preface:
This idea was formed after getting annoyed at Arc the Lad 2 when one of the damn 'wanted' monsters wouldn't spawn so i could get a bounty on his head. My purpose for this is entirely personal, in that fact that i just want to rant about the most annoying things the dev team can put in an RPG. These aren't things that happen and are set in stone. If you say i've forgotten something, chances are, its not that annoying to me. So don't everyone start saying "Random Battles" p.s. Yes, i know its usually Top 10, but i couldn't think of 2 others. ![]() 8. Non-Winnable Battles (Because of Plot) These can be good, right? Add a little plot, make you feel pathetic. Thats all good and well. Now, what happens if you don't know you're suppose to lose? You whip out all your fancy stuff. You're going ape on the super rare healing items, magic (if its not using an MP system of sorts). You get the point. In any case, assuming you're too lazy to reload and the next time, not heal, this can be a big pain. But its fairly preventable. 7. Non-Reenterable Areas This is for the sake of being able to go back to the older areas, just for fun. I hated when in Xenogears and FF8 they didn't let you go back into the towns at the end. Sure, they're trying to save space on the CD. Sure, they're trying to make it work with plot. But, meh. It still doesn't mean they should do it. Legend of Dragoon found a good way of getting around the problem: asking you to insert previous CDs. 6. Rare and Hard Monsters Now, its not annoying that they're hard, more that they're rare. In games like Wild ARMs 2, where you have that little monster encyclopeida going, its gets kind of annoying when not only a monster is hard to find (5% compared to other the random monsters) they make it hard and you die when ever you do finally get him to show up. Fantastic, thanks. Now, lets say you're happily fighting off some goons gaining levels. Sure, they're giving you a rough time, you manage to get out of the battles in relatively good shape. So, you're just leveling up, been a couple hours doing it (and not saving since town is kind of a ways off) then BOOYA here comes one of those rare monsters (who is also stronger) who just annihilates your now weaken party. And ofcourse, those monsters are always the ones you cant run away from either. 5. They kill off or make a party member leave the group. Now, this one can either be bad, or have no consequence. For example, you have Lavitz in Legend of Dragoon who dies. Big deal, all his skills are replaced by Albert. No leveling up time lost. **** happens, you move on. Aeris, as we all know, is one of the annoying examples. You could very easily be using her in your main and leveling her up. Luckily, she dies on the first CD. Similarly, the Suikoden series will kill off some party members, but they give you a chance to get them back, excluding Ted and Odessa. No big deal, they weren't in your group very long anyways. Now, by far, the worst one would have to be Elly in Xenogears. Not only is she flighty, joining and leaving the group, but she decides to leave permanetly near the end, thus, excluding herself from the final battles. Now, what makes it even more fun is when they take a member out of your group without giving you a chance to take off their items. Thats okay though, you never were very fond of the Deathly Sword Destruction. ![]() 4. Limited Inventory Space Okay, this is more common in the older game simply because they couldn't have more. Great, i guess thats a pretty good reason. Until they pull it off in a PSX game, like Arc the Lad 2. Sure, some like to balance it out by giving you a place to store them (Parasite Eve 2). But the majority prefer you to make a decision in either keeping healing items or the weapons/armor. Its even funnier when they give you a whole bunch of good items you want to keep, but having no choice but to discard some that you want to keep too. Annoying and inconvenient. 3. Linked Battles Mmmmm... yummy...most prevailant in Final Fantasy Tactics, but happens in other games as well. Nothing like those consecutive boss battles, eh? The ones you don't get a chance to heal or save in between of. Nothing like starting off a difficult battle (after having fought a hard one 2 seconds before) and dying because everyone was in the "danger" zone. And you think, too bad they don't let me save in between. Probably, they are doing you a favor. For example, my friend, who had been playing FF10, saved after a boss battle (not thinking there's be another one i guess) only to find out that he couldn't kill the next boss coming up at the current level he was at. End result: (unless you're using multiple saves) GAME OVER. Thats an often and possible problem in FFTactics. And for people who've played it, that game can actually be challenging. Game Over never had a greater meaning. ![]() 2. Stealing from/Dropping Monsters I hate the steal abilities. Any time they have rare items only dropped/stolen from a specific monster, you spend your time there trying to get it. You could be there for hours and end up empty handed. I think, if they're going to frustrate you with these 2 "features" the items should either A. buyable in stores B. only curative items that nobody gives a rat's ass about anyways. What makes it even more fun is when the monster has 3 possiblities (with the best being of a .5% of getting) of items AND when the rarest steal and drop items are different. Its also fanatastic when it ties in to Annoyance #6. Like trying to steal the equipment Elmdor is using in FFT. Not only will he not hand them over to you, but he'll kick your ass for trying (and even kick your ass if you're not trying )1. One Shot Deals This is the worst one. This one can actually include #2 and #7. You have one try to get something. Sometimes its just as simple as not looking everywhere, or they stick some sort of crazy secret in a 1-Time only dungeon that you only find out about from a walkthrough. Then there's the boss problems of stealing or dropping an item. Like in Xenogears. After you win the fight against Miang's gear, you can actually get an Executioner's Gown. She's only dropped it once for me, after countless play-throughs. Or maybe in Chrono Cross where stealing is a big part of getting all the good items from bosses (the dragon plates for example). Then, theres also the occasional hidden characters that if you miss, you never get the chance of getting. This happens in Planescape Torment with that ghost armor guy. Same kind of deal can happen with sides quests, like in Arc the Lad 2 and the Hunter's Jobs. I missed 3 because i didn't know they lost their availability once i had moved on in the plot. In any case (and there are many), this is definelty the worse of the 8. Being a collector of items in rpgs, this can screw up the whole game (thank you gameshark!) Anywho, thats it for my ranting. The end result? My spacebar thumb is tired. And this is why i don't start threads.

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
Nice thread Exodus, I concur pretty much with it except for points #8 (I love those kind of battles, FFIV/FFV/FFIX featured some of those and I enjoyed them a lot) and #3 (I like nasty challenges
).As for the rest I only think that the top 8 is missing the: *Insane random battles No matter what you say, you can be exhausted and just want to go from one town to town and then a bunch of losers (lvl 1 monsters) come and make spend time killing them. It's not that the fights are hard but they tend to bore you to death, plus you end up becoming a zombie who just presses the buttons continuously in order to just end the boring thing. Not to mention when you exited a really hard Dungeon you are almost close to the next town and the new monsters slay your party pretty bad... You don't believe me ? Play Skies of Arcadia, Golden Sun, Golden Sun 2, Lunar II Eternal Blue (Sega CD version)

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
Damn do I hate random battles as well. Getting from point A to point B while fighting crappy monsters is a pain in the butt and it's really fraustrating when you have to backtrack. That's why RPGs aren't my favorite genre and that's why I love Grandia II. I chose when to fight and when to back off.
I was in heaven in FFX when I got the No-Encounter for my group and in Skies of Arcadia I felt the same ecstasy when I equipped my ship with the mechanical part that makes you fly above the clouds in order to avoid random battles. |

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
Skieswas indeed the worst with random battles and throwing insane monsters right before you are near a life saving town...and to add insult to injury..Skies is one of those games where running from battles lowers your reputation....another example FF8..there are others, but we can not to delve

5, definitive. BTW: It would be good to use some spoil quotes in your descriptions. I just got heavily spoiled.

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
Man, 8 made me remember Phantasy Star IV... There's this part where you have to cross the carnivores tree forest but they just keep respawning! I've used ALL my items and lost most of my party when I decided to flee... and guess what? A cutscene! I was supposed to flee from this battle!!! Dammit! Thank God I had saved earlier
![]() Another one in PSIV is the permanent death of Alis Damn, it always bring tears to my eyes.

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
I have an addition for number 2. Enemies that steal FROM you. It's even worse when they steal from you and run away (giving you no chance to recover the item). They often seem to steal unique and rare items meaning the only thing you can do is reload. This is SUCH a pain in the ass and I don't know why they do it. If they want to let them steal, let them steal gold, or healing items or something... stealing your Ultimate Weapon can be a huge pain in the ass though and is just pointless and frustrating.

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
Very good thread, Exodus. I agree with everything.
And I also agree with Kaiser's insane random battles. I get frustrated even with awesome games like FF7 just because of them. Those annoying lv1 monsters suck, specially when you're trying to find something on the map. Xenogears' multiple boss fights can also be annoying. I also hate the "steal" ability. I haven't got any dragon plate in CC, because I hate Fargo and didn't bothered in bringing him to the fights. It took me a lot of planning to win Sir Dario without the black plate ![]() And I also had the same problem as Omegainf's with Phantasy Star IV. Took me a lot of time to give up and run away ![]() And a little thing that also annoys me greatly is when a hard and rare monster comes along, cast some powerfull spell and then run away. You're damaged and don't get any experience or items. It sucks.

You've hit the nail on that one, it's frustrating and is think RPG company should take note. I agree with all 8 reason. Samor: Why do you delete your post? it's quite funny.

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
What about Tales of Phantasia ? It's the major icon of excess of ramdon battles... BTW another annoying thing is fail to run, that was a goo thing in CC you could run from everything. On the rest of RPGs you are dying you try to run and then your party is slain after you fall to escape...

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
i was quite fond of the escaping from boss battles in CC. it was a good way to regroup before dying, to avoid having to reload.
i thought about putting random battles, but everyone notices that problem. i was going for the more non-obvious. enemies stealing from you isn't that common really, the only ones i can think of are FF7 and FFT. although, i did think of another one. when they don't make you use a character for a while and they get behind in levels and then they require you to use that character in the story. this will either make you just let them lie on the ground the whole time, or make you "power level" them. ps. sorry on the spoilers toriyama

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
Some RPGs feature some annoying puzzles which can drive you nuts and get you stuck on the game. I can remember how I spent 1 hour trying to solve the pyramid puzzle in Parasite Eve II, without having a clue of whats going on.
Another annoying aspect I find in any RPG is the numerous remixes they do from one main track. I was playing FF IX yesterday and I heard 2 remixes of " THe place where I belong" . Its not very annoying, but it makes you feel bored listening to that song As for the consecutive boss battles, they are annoying to some extent, but again, I do love a good challange ![]() Yours, -Elly

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
maybe that was the principle of the game afterall, you can't blame it.
For example, like FF series, they all have a character call 'cid', I got annoyed by this name though the 'cid' doesn't looks the same in evey series |

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
You can add this one, which is in most FF games. DEATH spells. Not only are they nearly impossible to pull off on enemies, if not pointless; enemies pull them off on you with easy. Not only is a death spell on ONLY one character annoying, in later FF games, theres an entire group death spell, especially since bosses like doing that. Luckily, there are some items to counteract this. Oh and revive spells/items that revive you to 1hp, WOW 1hp, that is sooooo wonderful! I can take anything they take at me now! And usually the enemy does their best move and overkills that char's amazing 1hp...... -_-

Re: My Top 8 RPG Annoyances
you, i could have put puzzles on there, but i usually use a walkthrough (yeah, i'm pathetic
)but yeah, i find the consecutive boss battles to be a good idea, its the saving in between option when you don't expect it, thats not nice. 'cid' is just a name, who gives a crap. the death spell is a little too specific. overall, in many games, the status changing and % based spells are rather useless. mainly because the regular fights are too easy and the ones you'd like to use it on are immune. but i agree the death spell can get annoying... in the FF games.
