KOF 2002: A step backwards, or purely nostalgic?
For those of you that have played KOF 2002, what do you think about it? With the game mechanics going back (almost) to its original roots - no striker, 3 on 3 matches, even some characters have a pre-97 feel to the moves and pacing - do you feel that it's a step backwards from the series, or a game purely geared to provide you with the raw KOF experience in the days of KOF '96? Thoughts/comments?

imo KOF should either evolve or stop being made. the old games are great, but the games in the last couple years have just been rehashes.

Re: KOF 2002: A step backwards, or purely nostalgic?
the second option in your poll is the closest to what I think, so I voted that.... IMO Kof2002 is at least a lot better than 2001. a WHOLE lot. The game it reminds me most of is actually Kof98, which is my personal favourite. However, despite reminding me of that, the quality of 2002 just isn't as good. Still a nice game though, but it's just not as big anymore as the series were ~5 years ago. as Decoy says; it wouldn't hurt if they did a complete rehash. The graphics are a joke compared to the (even older) Capcom vs SNK2 , and I won't even start comparing it with Guilty Gear X. Also, while reintroducing the classic fighting system wasnt such a bad move IMO, it also completely 'erased' any changes made to the system in recent years. Maybe they need to change something other than strikers. If they're porting all their stuff to the DC anyway, I have a tip for playmore/eolith/snkneogeo/whoeverelseisinvolved: use naomi hardware, kthx. Last edited by Samor; July 15th, 2003 at 02:52.. |

I like this game because there is no more broken striker system (i really don't like kof2k/2k1, except kof99) and the game speed seduced me to play this game. The only problem i got about this game is the presence of a few broken characters with bull**** unbelievable safe and cheap style. About the option 3, what do you say they ruined Takuma? He is still a great character if play the right way. |

...I've made a few comments about this game, when I posted some pics a while back. My opinion about it hasn't changed much since. I still believe that the latest KoF is mostly appreciated by KoF "purists" (people who consider KoF '98 to be the last "real" KoF), but its also good for the "regular" KoF player. As for the "soul-less" option, well... I'm not sure if it refers to the way the story develops, which would be irrelevant since it is after all, a "dream match/no official story" contest (much like KoF'98). If "soul-less" refers to the gameplay, then again its invalid, since the whole scheme (3 vs 3, no strikers, etc) has certainly been the heart and "soul" (the "basis" if you wish) of the KoF games. As I also said back then, everything that was good about KoF music, is back in this game. KoF2001 was not such a bad game IMHO as many people believe, but its music was totally uninspiring and boring. KoF2002 set things straight again in this department, thank God. On a lighter side, I really liked that the ultra-annoying (always IMO) King is gone , but poor Takuma isn't half the man he used to be. I won't say that he's actually "worse" now, just that he's... diffirent !! (no one can argue with that, right ? ). Then, there's the "timing" issue. This may become more apparent to people who use keyboards, rather than joypads. It seems (to some peope, including me) that the timing for the half-circle motions was reverted back to pre-KoF'96 "stiffness". It is less forgiving now IMO, and I still don't understand why they changed this, insted of leaving in their tried-and-true timing system (which has been the same since KoF'98). Anyway, my all-time favorite KoF, is still KoF'97

Re: KOF 2002: A step backwards, or purely nostalgic?
Takuma is not necessarily worse, I agree, but... he's actually my best character in the game, and imagine my horror when I learned that NONE of his previous moves (except that hcb + P) are retained. Needless to say, I got my ass handed to me on a platter, and I was not impressed ![]() As for the 'soul-less'... there have been arguments about how '02 is bland, as opposed to '98 (even when both games are a 'dream match' of some sorts that don't fit into the storyline). I just want to see what the general consensus is over here. My point still stands... what did they do to Takuma? No more Zanretsu-Ken and Shoran Kyaku? Waaaahh!

Re: KOF 2002: A step backwards, or purely nostalgic?
I voted for the second option, although I think they ruined Takuma (but it's no big deal for me, since I don't like playing with Takuma). The game has a old style, '98 feel - a great improvement when compared to '2001. IMO It's as good as KOF '98 (hope I don't get flamed for this ).
