What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
I've been thinking about Final Fantasy today, and found out that there are three ways in the series (though I haven't played 10 (2) and 11) to advance. 1. Abilities are restricted to one character who has only 1 job -> 4, and 9 2. You can choose jobs for everyone -> 1, 2, 3, 5 3. No jobs, only specific weapons for characters, and everyone is able to use magic. -> 6, 7 and 8 I prefer the style of 5, so you can create characters with your favourite abilities. Ever tried combining a monk with a black mage?? A must in the beginning of the game!!! I like the style of 9 also, you have to make choices, 'cause at some points it's better to have someone else in your team than the regular team you use. The third option is my less favorite... Especially FF8, no jobs, nothing special for a character, well okay, Quistis uses blue magic HOORAY. The only difference between the characters are the limit breaks and the weapons. But noone has got specific stats, you can max up everything for everyone, even in the beginning in the game. Well, FF7 at least they has got a well designed materia system, which I prefer way over the Junction system. And IIRC I read that the characters do vary in stats, some were better with magic than others, and some were just a lot stronger. And if you use a lot of materia, your physical stats go down and magic stats will rise. In short, I prefer a system in which you can see a difference between magic related jobs/characters and physical attack based character/jobs. And the freedom of 5 suited me perfect because I was able to mix, and create different character with multiple jobs, but still, I had a healer, thief/ninja, black mage/dragoon, and summoner/other job I don't remember.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
i think, i prefer the way FF9 did it with the items and getting the skills from them. but the job system is good too if you plan on spending lots of time on a game. nowadays, i don't have the patience to do that stuff (did lots of it in FFT). so yeah, FF9.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
I think that although the jobless kinda system is more true to the RPG mould, it kinda goes against the personality of hte characters if you get what I mean. A person may not be defined by thier job, but thier job is defined by thier personality. Imagine using Aeris as a fighter. Takes away from what her character is, doesn't it.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
Well I've never played FFT... And I really like the way gaining abilities from weapons in 9 also. And in FF5 it didn't took me too long training to get some good characters, but I wanted the best for everyone, so I just let everyone master one magic class, and a fighting class, for HP and vitality.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
I like for no jobs. But it also depend on what FF type. Medieval type like FFT would be boring if without jobs and so FFX with job would only for summoner.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
If i can't make a god of every character, i won't care playing further than completing the game and the secrets. But i played almost 400 hours to FF7, so, what would you think i'd like? XD

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
Greetings, Since I'm a traditional RPG player I think FF7 system is the best. The junction system of FF8 sucked IMO. But I do recognize that the job systems has it's advantages, and let you keep more in touch with your character's personality. Live long and prosper.

FFIV and FFIX system is the best one... without it you are breaking the rules of a RPG game. It takes out of the character the personality...

But of course the personality in the game is important, and in this case I agree with you. Too much freedom and it takes out the character's personality.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
well, in FF7 they did kind of control how your characters would turn out. they did have different magic and strength stats, so without telling you, they did have classes. not to mention the strength of the weapons which can also control the way the character is used. like rinoa and aeris couldn't be easily used as dependable fighters. this would be more the case if the numbers didn't go so high, to the 9999 mark. if it was set up so that you couldn't get that high, there would be even more distinction between magic and fighting characters.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
so far, with all their PSX/2 FFs they've always ysed different systems. to me, i find it better than reusing an old system. makes it that much more different. have to hand it to them for making something new in each installment.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
Greetings, IMO the best systems were the ones in FF6 and FF7. The Materia system was really good, and I also liked the espers in FF6. BTW Exodus, what you're saying about FF7 is just right. The characters had "built-in" classes, and you would be better if you enhanced their strong points (e.g.Magic, for Aeris). Live long and prosper.

Re: What way to advance in FF games do you prefer??
exactly. if you just leave the charcters as they are and don't spend hours collecting those stat bonus items in the submarine, they develop into their own classes. not a very deep difference, but there is a noticable difference between the fighters, the heavy fighters and the magic based characters. same goes for FF8, just that with those junctioning things, it kind of lets you alter the stats too easily, losing all difference in characters.

I liked the FFVI system the most, but it might get boring if it's reused again, FFVII's system was similar, even though it limits how much a character could do (because you can't learn and keep the abilities on the materia) it adds more strategies especially with the chain system, I thought it was good. So I prefered the ones in FFVI/VII, but with a little change. The thing about Abilities (like the system in FFIX) is that there aren't much customization to do, everyone are restricted to their abilities, and the bad thing about it is that you pretty much keep leveling up until u "unlock" those abilities, it gets boring after a while, I think the characters should have certain abilities or maybe better stats for specific job, but I would like my other characters to learn some other skills too and customize them. So that's why I got bored of FFIX near the end, the story/characters were great though, I love the ending. Last edited by Lost; July 5th, 2003 at 09:40.. |
