Nvidia + Sony = PS3's GPU.

Yes you all read it right. Nvidia is creating Sony PS3's GPU.

Quote:
Fechtor believes NVDA's GPU will be in Playstation 3 20.22 +0.33: Fechtor Detwiler out with call speculating NVDA is slotted as the GPU supplier for the much anticipated Playstation 3 multi-processor console. Firm points to XBox2 being merely another iteration of the original, which has placed considerable attention on Sony's third game console. In addition, Fechtor highlights additional positive for NVDA in light of first time graphics power will be outsourced, displacing SNE's Emotion Engine.

Hopefully it'll have a similar fan as the GeForce FX 5800, that would be a real ride

NVidia jumping sides? Looks like they didn't enjoy their stay on M$'s boat

Nah, we wouldn't want that. The GPU might melt when we have it paused. (Look up info about screensavers with FX 5800 if you don't get the joke.)

Does this mean PS3's HW architecture will be much similar to a PC unlike PS2?

I could never understand why it was called Playstation 2 Computer Entertainment System when it was less like a computer than X-Box and Gamecube.

IIRC they wanted to work together with ATI.

As far as I know the PS3 was considered to have 8 parallel VUs (PS2 had _only_ 2) with a larger cache, because so many game designers complained about it.

Keep the console wars away. If thee is one thing that I've learnt during my stay here is that gaming tastes can vary widely.

So let the variation in game types exist.

IMO it would be wise to have specialised VPU makers design their VPUs. Acer messed up bad back then when they made themselves most of their computer parts.
Oh, who made the PS2's VPUs anyway?

ATi never did the chip for the GC, ArtX did. They were bought out by ATi after the deal had been done.

Unfortunately this is incorrect, Sony worked with Toshiba and .. another company to produce all the chips in the PS2 and they are doing/have done the same with the PS3 chips. ATM PS2 is the only console which doesn't use licensed graphics chips (XBOX-Nvidia, GC-IBM) As Sony is in charge of all manufacture and processing of their consoles (this allows them to find cheaper ways to do stuff and lower prices) and They'll probably want to keep using their factories etc.

Actually its not Playstation 2 computer entertainment + (insert region here)[Japan, America, Europe]

Its Sony Computer Entertainment (+region)

Which is why their hardware/software has SCEA (for USA) SCEE (europe) and SCEJ (japan)

maybe its for their entire pc/console division?

It's still quite possible that Sony may get nVidia to design the GPU if not manufacture it.

This is unlikely to happen, because Sony has already invested several million Dollars for "researching".

If they are really using Nvidia GPU, I just hope the price is not very crazy.

They won't be working with Nvidia because the PS3 is not a PC. Unlike the XBOX where an Nvidia GPU is practical the PS3 will have a similar set of custom created chips which are all integrated like the current PS2 and having a seperate company to produce the GPU would mean bottlenecks in the system when data is transferred to a traditional GPU as well as a lack of control over component manufacture etc
