Post Sony announces new portable gaming system!

Look out Gameboy Advance, Sony is coming to get you!

Specs:

UMD or Universal Media Device. This storage media is 60mm, about half the size of the traditional CD and has a capacity of 1.8GB. That's right GB. Expect massively complex, detailed gaming (for your handheld anyway). 2.4 inches.

ATRAC encoding support (Sony's proprietary sound format used in their minidiscs). This could mean it will be a multi-media device.

Graphics specs are also impressive: NURB technology for rendering with full 3D polygons.

The unit's widescreen LCD screen (480x272, that's the coveted 16:9 ratio we all love) will be backlit.

The unit's sound processing will feature full 3D sound, PCM, and will be "fully reconfigurable."

MIPS 32-bit processor.

Also, a secure ROM cartridge for anti-piracy efforts.

Super-one-chip solution for graphics, sound, etc.

Memory stick.

Rechargeable battery.

CPU: 90 nanometers with a clock speed TBD.

USB 2.0 connection for talking to your PC, cellphone, even your PS2.

Embedded RAM.

Supports additional video codecs (other than MPEG 4.)

We suspect that the PSP will also come equipped with an analog stick and, since the media is disc-based, it may also have a flip-top lid/cover.

it's gonna be like a palm handheld system, i though their handheld was codenamed playboy (knew the name was too good to be true) if the price is as cheap as the gba, then we might find nintendo in a deeper hole than they already are, just when nintendo thought the wrost was over, gl nintendo hang in there

I give this about a week for the hackers to crack the protection

sony's entry into the portable market is a serious threat to nintendo's dominace. If anyone can take the crown away from nintendo, its sony.

Judging from the specs, I would expect the PSP to be relatively expensive. After all, the p4 and the athlon barton xp are currently the only .9 micron devices on the consumer market, not to mention the moveable parts required for the optical drive, plus a hefty Li-Ion battery (to power both the drive and a backlit widescreen... either that or pathetic battery life).

if this thing is as cheap as the gba when it comes out, then either sony is losing mad money on it, or Nintendo is being idiotic with their gba pricing.

I agree, however, it'll still make casual copying (read: flash linker) difficult

Its has a USB port. That just make it easier for the hackers.

However, I am glad to see that. I always believed that Handheld systems have the potential to render 3D models like the PSOne.I hope this product makes a fair competition.

Sorry for the double post, but it seems that the new system is nothing than the good ol' PSOne. That console just doesnt wanna die, eh?

With that resolution, aspect ratio, disk size, and MPEG4 support, it sounds like they’ll pitch it as a mini DVD player.

I'll have to wait and see how they can pull off optical storage in a handheld. I'm not sure if it can be done reliably at this point.

Any idea when it is due out? I'd be interested in one if the price wasn't to horribly expensive. But I agree with Alias, with all those features, I think it will be quite "pricy".
Well, looks like the handheld market might just become the next console "battleground".
sincerely,

1.8GB storage media for a Handheld? I take that to be impressive.

Of course FMV and Sound files take up the majority of space in any game...

The big thing here are its sound capabilities. If there's one thing that the GBA really suffers in, it's sound. To have CD quality sound from a handheld would be just amazing.

I think this really could rival GBA theoretically... but it might be the case that the GBA already has such a strong hold on the market, that it would never really sell well.

You can't say that. When you're Sony, things can definetly change

and besides, when is this thing coming out? it might be coming out at the same time the next GB will be, and who knows what nintendo might have up their sleeve. however, its probably about time they dropped backwards compatibility.
