Unhappy A Litlle CoNFusEd!!

i just read an artical somewhere about procesors and the ps2 procesor and aparently the ps2 procesor is better than an ordany pc processor even tho it 240mhz. the only reason pentium show procesor in mhz and ghz is becuase they havent evolved them that much e.g it all well and good having a 2.3ghz but it the giger flops that count more the ps2 has a 6 giger flop procesor but a normall pc has a 3 giger flop procesor and acourding to rumours the ps3 will have a 100 or 1000 giger flops procesor clocked at 4.0ghz. so realy procesor dont advanced i dunno now im confuses LOL

It's because, most processors in consoles aren't "CISC" cpus.. They are "RISC" cpus.. Different type of technology from the "CISC" chips we use.. Both amd and intel cpu's are "CISC" cpus.. RISC cpus have better floating point processing.. Hence they are very well suited for gaming..

now come on PS3 will not be 4.0 ghz... Please Sony just hyping their system to take down competition away from Xbox or the next Nintendo Console. Also didn't the PS2's hype kill the Dreamcast in a way*1 factor*.

a pc's cpu has to do a million and one things as oposed to a console cpu that has to do about 3 things at a time (im exjurating to make my point) hence a console pcu can be very specilized and a pc cpu has to be able to do everything. the gaming IPC of a console cpu is highyer but its still low considering the low clock

A specificaly designed chip will always be better than a similarly clocked generic chip.

The PS2 was designed from hte ground up to be an extremly efficient gmaing machine. The problem that arose however is that developers used to working with PC style architectures took (are taking) a long time to get to grips with it.
In theory, it's quite possible that the PS2 (low clock, but pure console architecture) could beat the X-Box (Brute force, relatively low IPC) if it were programmed correctly, but who really knows.
Sony will be sticking with this architecture for the next generation of PS, IIRC.

You may wonder why if this is so good, why PCs don't use the same architecture. There are three main reasons for this:
  1. PCs are a modular system (I feel like replaceing my CPU today. I might change my graphics card tomorrow), the PS2's architecture relys on it being a fully integrated system
  2. PCs are general purpose machines. Switching to a multimedia optimised architecture would destroy performance on productivity apps
  3. Legacy support. Switching architecture breaks legacy support
