When is it time to give up on a series?

As one could probably guess from looking at my post pattern about the subject (even though some Legend of Dragoon fan seems to think otherwise ), I've been getting more and more annoyed by the Final Fantasy series. I play quite a lot of RPGs, but it seems that every time I find an amazing gaming experience, the quality of the most recent FF seems that much worse by comparison. It started with FF7. Just about everyone seems to think this game is the best thing since sliced bread. I, on the other hand, found it easily one of the WORST games I've played. Then I went on to FF8. A disaster, to say the least. Then FF9. Yegads, the game I consider just a couple games removed from the worst game I've played.

Fast forward to PS2. I've been playing a number of RPGs when I recently got the system. I started with Suikoden III, which turned out to be the most surprisingly pleasant experience in gaming for me. Then I got to Xenosaga, which, as I mentioned here, was, if not quite as good, is easily one of my favorite games. The next game I put a lot of time into was FFX. I figured with everyone talking about how much people who liked the plot style of FFX would like Xenosaga, I'd be in for a real treat because I loved the way the plot unfolded in Xenosaga. Fast forward twenty hours into FFX. To be quite frank, I think this plot may even be worse than FFI. That's just wrong. It may even end up being the first FF I can't bear to finish. I don't want to be stuck in a poorly acted soap opera.

This then begs the question of the subject: when is enough enough and it's time to finally give up on a series and move on to bigger and better things? Because I'm just about to throw FF into the trash and stop wasting my time on games that don't appeal to me anymore.

If you dont like a series, why continue to play it soley because other people like it? Don't perceive this as a personal attack or anything, I just dont see the point in bleeting.

I'd definately recommend Suikoden 1/2 if you havent played them. Being in Europe, I can't get S3 though :|

FF VII was a masterpiece incomparison to what we have now. people liked it most because it resembled the first 3D FF game ever, had nice storyline, good characters , excellent musical track and entertaining mini games. It aint the best though, but it remains as a top seller, like it or not. ( so yeah, its one of the best RPGs ). However, they should end the FF series in one way or another. The series is getting down recently and i dont prefer eye candy over storyline. I ll just wait for FF 11. from the screenshots i saw, it looked interesting, I would give that my very last try.

It's about tastes... I personally can't stand the Quake series, while everyone loves it. It's not that I don't like FPS's, it's just that I find it senseless. When it comes to RPG's, the thing becomes even more subjective. But yeah, I agree that the FF series is living too much time (though I am one of the people who has FFVII at the top of an altar and I still haven't played FFX).

The only FFs I really know are FF6, FF7, (both are the best of FF series IMO), I played FF8 once, I didn't enjoy it, then FF9 which wasn't that bad, but not great game though...

I don't care of superb gfx if the storyline, the battle system, and the extras (gold saucer in FF7 ) are bad

When is it time for a fan to give up? Or for the manufacturer to give up?

I don't know. I don't believe in brand loyalty. I won't buy a game or movie just cause it's part of a series that I've liked in the past. With an RPG I'll always rent it or borrow it from a friend before I buy it. I bought FF1 on NES, FF4 and FF6 on SNES, and FF7 on PSX and I was happy with all of those purchases. FF8 looked cool in previews, and it was kinda fun at the beginning, so I bought it. I'll admit I was really disappointed, but that happens sometimes. As for FF9, I rented it, but didn't really like it off the bat, so I didn't buy it. I borrowed it from a friend and beat it, but that's just cause I had nothing better to play at the time - at least I didn't spend money on it. FFX I also played at a friend's house and was glad I didn't pay for it. I'm not gonna defend FF7, to each his own, but that's the last FF I really like and was into... I don't love the FF name and don't get overly excited about new titles in the series.

As for the manufacturers, obviously they're gonna use the name to be as profitable as popular. In the case of Final Fantasy, they're making alot of money so I think we'll probably see quite a few more games with the Final Fantasy name.

It's like the Street Fighter series, we'll see FF@ FF ex+@, FF turbo, etc... that's quite sad, Squaresoft used to make very good games b4

Personaly I loved FFX, 7, and 6. 8 was badly marrby the annoying Draw system, and 9 seemed like it had been made by Nintendo.
It's all down to personal preference tho. If you like it you like it, continue playing it, if you don't, don't bother.

I can't give my opinion on FFX cuz I don't have a PS2...
But concerning FF8 and 9, I was very disappointed, esp. for FF8...

I haven't played FFX so I can't comment on it but the last FF game I've really enjoyed was FF7. FF8 and 9 failed to meet my expectations and really created a dent in my faith in Square. I think it's time for Square to renovate the series, especially the dated battle system.

hmmm... at this point, FF is just a name to sell games. the final fantasys would be the same game if their names would be changed. squaresoft would still release an RPG, might as well call it FF to get the ball rolling and make that extra money off the series' name.

btw, ^____^'s sig is very distracting when trying to post
... in a good way.

Indeed.
I think Square should stop trying to get back the 'golden age' of the FF's, and concentrate in... let's say, Xenosaga? I have great interest in this series, I wouldn't like it facked up by some ambitious business man.
