I have only played FF7, FF8 and FF9. I must say FF7 is the best, I love its storyline and the materia magic system. I hate the magic drawing/junction system in FF8 the rest are ok imo, cant say much on FF9, since I have only played it for a few hours.

FFVII is the best. I don't judge from the graphic, but I think about the story line and character's typical. Second is FFX, again the story line [though it's too short for me]. Third is FFVIII [only the graphic and of course Rinoa!].

I like Chronicles and Chrono too. Basically, I played almost all Square's games...but only few of them that I played with all of my heart

For the original question:

Original PSX FF: FF7. IMHO the other two weren't worth the time I spent playing them.
Ported to PSX FF: Origins. The other ports were crap, I'd rather play the originals on my SNES or an emulator.

Note: I haven't played any PS2 FFs yet.

FF Chronicles should not be up there either if this is FF's starting with the Playstation. FFIV and Chrono Trigger were made for the Super Nintendo. They did not start on the Playstation. Why is Final Fantasy Tactics not on there?

Answering Raiden1803 question all I've to say is that the PS2 is really expensive. Let me see how I can illustrate this... The average wages paid here are around R$ 500,00 (although the per capita income is much less) and the PS2 costs R$ 1.500,00 (that is, the playstation costs 3 times the average wages). Of course many people earn more than that (my own familiy lives with an average of R$ 3.000, but that isn't very much, either).

And I think we got the same problem as you with the first consoles, since they were all imported from the US.

If it's just compairing PSX and up Final Fantasies then it's:

FFVII - This'll probably be the best Final Fantasy (minus FFVI to me) ever, long game, tons of stuff to do, and great story

FFX - awsome graphics, but as stated before, too short and not much extra things to do in this game.

FFIX - Only really like this game because Square tried to return to the original Final Fantasy in this one: Vivi - Black Mage, Dagger & Eiko*Sp?* - White Mage & summoners, Zidane - Thief, Steiner - Knight, Armanet*spelling wrong* - Monk(?), Quina - Blue Mage

FFIX wasn't that good, it was worth playing, but the characters killed it IMO, looked too goofy.

No way will I like FFVIII it was way too boring for me, I couldn't stand it at all to go through the game, I dunno why.
