Resident Evil 2 PC version problem under XP

Well, I was diging into my CD collection and I found myself face to face with my PC version of RE2, so I decided to install it and see how it performed(last time I played it, it was on my old P3 450 and my TNT2 16mb), with FSAA and such.
So, I started playing, everything was looking good, and after a while I saved my game, quit the game and did something else.
Later, I came back to the game, and I was surprised to see that my save wasn't there, so I checked the save folder, but the file was still there. Looks like the game doesn't detect the save, any idea what could casue that and is there a fix to it ?

now we're talking about that: in case you're fan of the pro pinball series and want to play em in XP: use win98 compatibility mode

old games now only work best on win98
