must play arcade scrolling shooters?

Which arcade shoot'em ups are must plays? I would guess they are included in the R-type series, Darius series, Parodius series, Radiant Silvergun series, and the Pachi series. Which games or series have I missed? Which games are particularly the best in any of the series mentioned or unmentioned?

I'm a big fan of Guwange, DoDonPachi, and Strikers 1945 Plus.

ah yes..the Strikers 1945 series actually has 3 games the original..a part 2 and a Plus version released for the Neo Geo

We also recommend Vapor Trail..released for both Arcade and home consoles... The Salamander / Life Force / Gradius series..on console and arcade ports. Samor turned us on to the Salamander Pack..released for PSX and Saturn.

Then their is Gaiaires for Genesis, and a brilliant underrated Genesis game called Wings of War.

The Legendary Wings game was fairly good as well...both an Arcade and NES release

Sonic Wings...arcade..brilliant...use the Zinc emulator

The R-Type Series (Arcade, Master System, Gameboy, SNES, PSX) rules them all. Other good ones:

* Gradius/Nemesis Series (Arcade)
* 194x / 19xx Series (Arcade)
* Aerofighters/Sonic Wings Series (Neo-Geo)
* GigaWing (Arcade)
* Einhänder (PSX)
* Vapor Trail (Arcade, Genesis)
* Viewpoint (Neo-Geo)
* Axelay (SNES)
* Earth Defense Force (Arcade, SNES)
* Armed Police Batrider (Arcade)
* Parodius (SNES)
* Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie (SNES)
* U.N. Squadron (Arcade, SNES)
* Darius (Arcade, SNES)
* Starfox (SNES, N64)
* Mahou Daisakusen Series (Arcade)
* Dangun Feveron (Arcade)

IMHO R-Type 3 for the SNES beats them both.

Edit: Added a couple more games.

Nothing comes close to Radiant Silvergun on the Sega Saturn.. But maybe Ikaruga on the Dreamcast does..

Try the Thunderforce Series on the Genesis and Axelay on the Snes..

Strikers 1945 1, 2, and 3 on the arcades were nice too..

Super Star Soldier, Blazing Lazers, Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, Sapphire, Spriggan Series, and A LOT MORE for TG-16 PC Engine (best shooters-console ever)

For arcade: Armored Police Batrider (look at Raine for great arcade shooters)

You must at least try Giga Wing 2, just to be annoyed by the voice of your character whenever you're executing a 'reflect'.... "REFURECTO... FOOOOOORCE!!!" gets on your nerve after a while hehe.
