DirectX is fully backwards compatible. All your games will still work, plus there will be support for future DX9 games (provided you have the hardware of course).

Demigod, I have been trying to figure out if DX 9.0 has any revolutionary changes since version 8.0. Do you have any idea? and whats the advantage of having a DX9 compatible 3D card ( like a Geforce FX) over a DX8 compatible card ( such as a Geforce IV) other than thier specs......?

Right, but does MS remove things, such as 3DNow! (standard instruction set) which was introduced in DX6..?

Raiden: if you read his post, he said that all direct x versions are backwards compatible. You can even still play your old DX3 games. DX9 wont cause compatibility issues whatsoever.

I thought it would have been obvious in the first 8 versions that it was backwards compatable, but I guess not.

I installed it last night, and it works fine. I can't wait for a release of the SDK though. Any word from FutureMark yet?

LISTEN.

I have it and all of my games work. NOTHING will become incompatible by (successfully) installing DX9. :dots:

I don't see why they would. I would think they would add more features and support more hardware, not take them away.

I'm not an expert on DirectX but I believe DirectX 9 will be an extension of the technology introduced with DirectX 8 (programmable shaders). (IMO) it won't be revolutionary, just evolutionary (unlike what Nvidia is claiming with the "dawn of cinematic computing" stuff). DirectX 9 will expand on the theories and concepts in DX8, allowing more flexibility and features. DirectX 8 was a significant break from anything before it but was a bit too limited. Programming pixel shaders in DX8 are done in assembly and didn't have literation or loops. It's instruction registers were also very limited and the pipeline was all integer. DX9 will have iteration and loops, as well as larger instruction registers and a fully floating pipeline (much greater accuracy in rendering and color). The graphics language 'Cg' should also be released sometime next year, offering a high-level programming language for shaders. It'll be one more step towards a completely programmable GPU. Apart from vertex shader 2.0 and pixel shader 2.0 there's also Displacement mapping but I don't know what that's about.

After installing DX9 I got no problems. I did get about a 400 point increase on the FFXI benchmark. When I ran 3DMark2001 SE I got a 2700 point decrease. When I ran it again I saw the my framerate was limited to 100 fps. I have V-sync off so I don't know what the problem is on that.

Oh yeah Ninja, the SDK is out. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Displacement mapping is essentially a curved Enviromental Bump Map. It's not really a pertanent feature. Not anymore than a floating point zbuffer.

It can be done through several means., Including The Vertex Shader array, Pixel Shader array, And N-patch (Introduced by ATI)

yes they are the only fully compliant cards readily available.

Matrox Parhelia is partially DX 9.0 compatible. And the Geforce FX will be when it arrives.

Woo Hoo! New 3DMark score in my sig. I tested my PC twice today. Once after installing DX9, and once again after installing DDR memory. Both times gave me a nice little boost, for a total of an extra 500 3DMarks. (YAY!)

Heh, I got <1 fps difference on each test, after solving my 100 fps limiit problem. 10,002 marks on my comp with no overclocking sounds good to me.
